Apple set to announce iPad Mini, will live stream press conference ...

?

Apple is set to announce the latest addition to its iPad line of tablet computers, beginning at 1 p.m. EST. But in a shocking move, the company is now live-streaming the announcement over the Internet.

This is the first time Apple has offered live video of a press event since 2010, and the practice has been rare in the company?s history, as former CEO Steve Jobs preferred the anticipation and sense of exclusivity that comes with an invitation-only press event. The live video stream is currently only known to work on Apple TV, the company?s set-top box designed to stream video content from the Internet and iTunes, but observers expect another stream to be available on the company?s website as the event draws nearer.

Today?s event comes only a few weeks after Apple held a similar event to launch the iPhone 5, a product that has sold extremely well in the mean time.

Apple is widely expected to launch a smaller version of the popular iPad tablet computer today. The device is expected to sport a 7-inch display with a lower price point designed to better compete with Samsung, Microsoft and an array of other low-cost tablets that have flooded the market place. As with previous product releases, leaks from the company?s supply chain have removed much of the surprise from today?s announcement, as photos and technical specs have already flooded the Internet. It will be an accomplishment, indeed, if Tim Cook has a surprise for the Apple faithful when he takes the stage later today.

Join us live right here at 1 p.m. EST as we provide live updates from the press event, complete with our brand of Canadian humour for the Android-lovers in the crowd.
