The Business Controller is charged with monitoring the fiscal goals of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.? The position is part-time. The Business Controller oversees the financial operations of the Fraternity?s four corporate entities: Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Phi Delta Theta Foundation, Walter B. Palmer Foundation, and the Frank J.R. Mitchell Foundation.? A list of competencies and responsibilities that will be used as overall performance metrics are listed below:
COMPETENCIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Process Management- Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and monitor the performance of a process
- Manage all internal controls over financial reporting of the Fraternity?s four corporate entities
- Manage the administration of accounting systems and define priorities for technology enhancements and support
- Manage the development, documentation, and maintenance of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls; ensure compliance with these policies
- Nonprofit Business Acumen- Demonstrated business literacy and ability to make quick decisions in critical situations ?
- Analyze financial results, and utilize financial metrics to identify trends, opportunities, and actionable items
- Prepare financial reports, including generally accepted accounting principles financial statements, interim management financial reports, reporting on budgeted vs. actual expenditures, IRS Form 990, and ad hoc financial reports as needed
- React accordingly to modify accounting practices to IRS standards
- Staff Development- Demonstrated ability to develop staff, volunteers, and constituents to successfully support the Fraternity?s financial operations and goals
- Oversee the Fraternity?s Bookkeeping staff to review general ledger postings that include the posting of month-end closing entries, account reconciliation, and compliance with? record retention policy with respect to the general ledger, journal entries, financial reports, and other relevant records
- Work in conjunction with the Fraternity?s executive staff to set forth a budget for each entity each year or biennium
- Function as the liaison to the investment committee
- Serve as the liaison to the auditors of each corporate entity as needed during interim, ad hoc, and year-end periods
- Strategic Agility- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in decision making that considers current processes, potential opportunities, and future conditions
- Monitor the success of the Fraternity?s four corporate entities investments
- Manage the cash assets of the Fraternity for the greatest possible return
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS
- A bachelor?s degree in business, accounting, or finance is required. An advanced degree is preferred, and a CPA is required
- Experience in nonprofit accounting preferred with familiarity of nonprofit accounting guidelines and federal government grant requirements
- At least five years of professional experience
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with others at all levels of an organization while consistently displaying a high level of professionalism at all times
- Excellent analytical and organization skills
- Flexibility and comfort with ambiguity
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Extremely detail-oriented
- Excellent management skills, including experience effectively managing staff and developing talent
- Excellent computer skills including database management and MS Excel
- A willingness to work non-standard hours and occasional weekends
SALARY AND BENEFITS
