Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder and ESPN reporter Samantha Steele made headlines in December when they snuck off to Hudson, Wis., to get married in a civil ceremony that remained secret for several hours.
The proceedings went so well that they're planning to do it all again in early April. At a Phoenix ceremony surrounded by family and friends.
The happy couple revealed their plans during a podcast with Sports Illustrated's Jimmy Traina that was posted on si.com on Tuesday, Jan. 15.
If you like saccharine interviews with celebrity newlyweds, you'll love the Ponder-Steele banter. Ponder's there for the first 10 minutes. Then he leaves so Steele can spend the next 20 minutes discussing her career, "College Gameday" and her current lack of pregnancy.
Especially touching is the couple's recounting of Ponder's marriage proposal, which he made using a Christmas lights display on his house. In clear violation of the rules of "Jeopardy," he did not phrase his proposal in the form of a question.
"It was a statement," Ponder said. "She had no options."
"I still don't know that I technically accepted a proposal 'cause I don't remember any question ever," Steele said. "We just somehow ended up in Hudson, Wisconsin in front of a judge or something. Somehow I'm married. That's all I know."
Steele was not too
pleased that one of her friends leaked news of the engagement to a website."We knew it would bring a lot of extra scrutiny on him in the middle of the season," she said. "But once it was out, we certainly weren't going to lie about it."
Steele says she understands why the whirlwind courtship-engagement-marriage raised some eyebrows.
"I get it. ... You get married quickly, people assume there's something fishy going on. There is something fishy. We're both strange people. And yes, this is not necessarily normal. But it was right for us."
