Hey there!
This is an interest check for my upcoming roleplay, which I have yet to name. I hope to garner enough interest beforehand so when it is ready, we can jump right in. Okay here we go.
What is it?
The basis of the roleplay is an idea I've been tossing around for a while. Essentially, in the wake of a World War II that took a few different turns, England is severely crippled, and while the United States and the Soviet Union begin their cold war, the English are struggling to hold their country together. The story would take place in London in 1948, a year after the end of the fictional world war, still largely in ruins and with a massive homeless population. With poverty comes crime, and a handful of inventive criminals have taken inspiration from popular comic books of the time, dressing in elaborate costumes and masks to hide their identity and further their agenda. The police are crippled from the war and unable to effectively combat the crime wave, leaving much of London in chaos. Taking similar inspiration from comic books, several vigilantes arose to combat the crime in the stead of the police, even if the government condemns them. Players will play either a hero or a villain, and though I have some set plot points, it would be largely character driven.
Solo! Why did you make this?
This idea has been floating around for a while now, and I had been debating whether or not I should write it as a standalone story or create a roleplay with it. After thinking about it, I decided that a roleplay would be all around better, mainly because I've noticed a lack of quality, original superhero/vigilante roleplays recently. I'd also love to see some of the other writers on here bring their own ideas into my world. My primary goal would be to explore collaborative writing in a Watchmen-inspired original setting.
Oh, but why do I want to join?
I pride myself on quality. If you're looking for a simple, low-literacy roleplay about wolves or highschool, you probably don't want to join. On the other hand, if you're looking for high-literacy writing in an original setting, then you've come to the right place. If you're a fan of The Watchmen, or Christopher Nolan's Batman series, or just comic books in general, you will probably want to join. If you are not afraid to go to dark places with your writing, then you will like it here. I want to explore more than just the exploits of the heroes and villains, I also want to delve into their psyche and their motivations. Are they broken? What caused them to break. I want to focus as much on their flaws as their strengths. If that interests you, then this is the right place.
I don't know if I qualify Solo! What do you expect of me?
I don't like to toot my own horn, but I consider myself an advanced writer. Thus, I expect advanced writers. Ideally, I'd like everyone to be be on par with me or better. I have some high standards, but I know plenty of people on here who can easily meet them. To be brutally honest, if you are looking to make the step from low-lit/semi-lit to advanced, this is not the place. I'd prefer that all applicants have a good amount of experience, at least as much as I do, however, experience is meaningless if you can impress me. I'd rather not set a minimum post rate or length, as anyone who qualifies for this should know what is appropriate. I will say that I expect 1-4 good, solid paragraphs, depending on the situation. Any less, and you should wait until you have more content. Any more, and your post is probably too cluttered. I'd also expect all players to maintain a consistent post rate. I understand that real life can get in the way, but if you know ahead of time that you can't keep a consistent post rate, then you should not bother applying.
Additionally, I am only going to accept 10 characters in order to keep things efficient. It's not going to be first come first serve, so you will be able to take your time. Anyone who comes up with an acceptable character but doesn't quite make the cut will be put on a "waiting list" in case someone else quits. If this gets enough interest and someone I trust is willing to help me keep things organized, then I will allow more characters. I also expect everyone to follow the rules I lay out(when I lay them out) and not ask for exceptions. If I want to grant an exception, I will let the person know.
Hey wait a minute! I don't even know you Solo! Who the hell are you?
I've been a member on RolePlayGateway for well over three years. In all that time, I have never released a roleplay. Why? Because I wasn't ready. I've spent the whole time here learning about what makes a roleplay succeed or fail. Now, I am ready to put all I have learned to the test. Before coming to RPG, I wrote scripts for different Machinima projects on the old Machinima.com forums, as well as world and character lore for various machinima projects. Since then, I've co-founded another machinima forum and remain active and writing. On RPG, I have been growing as a writer exponentially for past three years, through participation in a variety of roleplays with hordes of talented writers, all of whom have taught me something important. In my spare time, I write almost constantly. I fill notebooks with worlds and ideas and characters, I practice world building, story structure, and character development when perhaps I should by studying math. I write short stories, poetry, short films, and sometimes fanfiction, and I am currently working on a novel. On roleplaying games like fallout or skyrim, I write extensive backgrounds for my characters, and I constantly brew up ideas and save them for later use. Again, trying not to toot my own horn, but I consider myself a skilled writer and wish to present only my best in this roleplay.
Okay, what if I want to make a suggestion?
Feel free! The whole point of a roleplay is collaborative writing. If you aren't adding to the mix, it's not collaborative, it's not fun, and it's not roleplay! I have a lot of the roleplay designed, and I've presented only a small taste here, so please feel free to offer suggestions. If I like it I will make it integral.
Phew, okay so now that that is done, I'd really appreciate any support/comments/things I should change/questions etc. Yes, I posted only a tiny bit about the actual content of the roleplay, but more will be available soon, I promise! If you're interested, let me know! It will make me super happy. If you know anyone who might be interested, let them know too! I seriously can't stress enough how important support is. Without support from players, my dreams can't come true. Eeek!
