Google's Chromecast vs. Apple's AirPlay

Chromecast

396528445767FORTUNE -- Google (GOOG) took another crack at television this week, having failed to get much traction with the Google TV solution it introduced three years ago.

The new entrant is a $35 dongle called Chromecast that plugs into the HDMI port of a high-definition TV and receives audio and video content streamed over Wi-Fi -- thus offering many of the features Apple (AAPL) users have enjoyed through AirPlay and Apple TV.

How do the two systems stack up?

The Verge's Chris Welch, who produced the tale of the tape above, offers this summary:

"AirPlay is built into every iPhone and iPad, and works with most newer Macs as well. Using it for audio and video requires that you purchase a $99 Apple TV, or you can just wirelessly stream music to a number of "Made for AirPlay" speakers and sound systems, which range in price. After several years on the market, AirPlay is well-established and understood: consumers know how to use it, and developers have been pushing the boundaries with games that take advantage of multiple screens.

"Google is pricing the Chromecast aggressively at a mere $35. (Google says Google Cast, Chromecast's underlying technology, will also eventually be built-in to TVs as well ? we'd assume Samsung is involved.) Once you've got the stick, you can send video to it from almost anywhere Chrome runs: an Android device, a Windows or Mac PC, even iOS devices. That's definitely more flexible than the AirPlay experience, but could offer compatibility headaches as well."

Retirees could bear brunt of Detroit bankruptcy

By Joseph Lichterman and Deepa Seetharaman

DETROIT (Reuters) - When Paula Kaczmarek moved to Detroit in 1978 to work for the city's public library system, a guarantee of good retirement benefits was a key sweetener that convinced her to leave her previous job in Boston.

"I basically came here for future security," said Kaczmarek, who retired in 2012, two years earlier than she planned, as the public library was facing potential layoffs.

Kaczmarek is among the more than 20,000 unionized retirees whose pensions and healthcare benefits hang in the balance after Detroit filed the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.

In an interview, Kevyn Orr, Detroit's state-appointed emergency manager, said restructuring the city's crippling legacy costs is critical to Detroit's recovery.

"We can't pay benefits with money that's not there," he said. "It can't be done."

Retirees and labor officials acknowledged that the city's finances were in shambles and they would have to share in the sacrifice to help Detroit recover. But they said some of the significant benefits cuts reportedly proposed by Orr in talks with creditors would have a devastating impact on their lives.

"I do have some compassion for people who are investors in Detroit, naturally, because a lot of my pension income is based on investing," said 63-year-old retired city librarian Ellen Simmons. "But it's hard to have a lot of sympathy when there are 20,000 real people who are not living high on the hog."

Although city retirement benefits are enshrined in Michigan's constitution, there is no clear road map for what will happen in a Chapter 9 bankruptcy, experts said. The question is made more complicated by the fact that it is unclear who has the legal authority to negotiate on behalf of the retirees.

Orr and labor officials have locked horns over how to manage pension and retiree healthcare obligations. Orr was appointed by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder in March to try to resolve the city's financial crisis and tackle its $18.5 billion in long-term debt.

The city lists about $644 million in unfunded pension liabilities, but Orr has said the number is closer to $3.5 billion if "more realistic assumptions" are taken into account. Other unfunded post-employment liabilities, which include retiree healthcare costs, account for $5.7 billion of the city's outstanding debts.

The city of Detroit's two largest unsecured creditors are the city's general retirement fund and the police and fire departments' retirement fund.

In a court filing, Orr said the city intended to create a committee of retired employees to represent those workers.

"The appointment of a retiree committee is adequate representation for these individuals and to facilitate the city's restructuring of its pension and other post-employment benefit liabilities," Orr said in his filing.

Orr faced three separate lawsuits from current and retired workers trying to bar his attempts to file Chapter 9.

The conflict ratcheted up when Detroit filed for bankruptcy in federal court Thursday just minutes before labor lawyers could block those efforts in another state court located 90 miles away.

At this point, it's unclear how much of a haircut, if any, the retirees will be forced to take. Still, they're preparing for the worst.

Simmons, who retired in January after working for the public library for more than 30 years, said she might have to go back to work or even move in with one of her children depending on how much is cut from her pension.

"My married kids, do they want mom living with them? They'll be gracious about it, but that's not what any of us want," she said.

LGBT group OneTable finds acceptance at evangelical college in Pasadena, Calif.

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: miamiherald.typepad.com --- Sunday, July 14, 2013
BY SARAH PARVINI, ASSOCIATED PRESS PASADENA, Calif. -- Nick Palacios struggled to get his conservative Pentecostal parents to accept him as a gay evangelical Christian for nearly a decade before his family found a common ground through faith. Now, as an openly gay seminarian, the 29-year-old hopes to carve out a similar acceptance for other gays in the broader evangelical community through his role as president of the nation's first LGBT student club sanctioned by a major evangelical seminary. The group, called OneTable, formed last fall at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, one of the world's largest multi-denominational seminaries, and has attracted about three dozen students. "It quickly became apparent to me that I was going to be OK and that I wasn't going to have to forsake my faith for my sexuality," Palacios said of his struggle for acceptance. "I really hope that people will see Fuller and OneTable as a model of what the body of the church is supposed to do in this situation." Fuller's stance has created ripples in the larger world of Christian colleges and seminaries, where a growing number of gay evangelical students are asserting their dual identities with underground clubs and nascent political activism. Last year, for example, a group called the Biola Queer Underground was quashed by Biola University, a small, conservative Christian school in nearby Orange County. This fall, the LGBT group plans on staging ral ...

A playlist of 5 of Randy Travis' greatest songs

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Millions of fans are thinking of Randy Travis and repeating calls for prayers following the country music star's stroke and surgery Wednesday night in a Texas hospital. Here's a playlist of five of Travis' most inspirational and heartbreaking songs.

? "Three Wooden Crosses" ? Released in 2002 during his gospel period, this song returned Travis to the top of the charts after a nine-year absence. The song's narrator refers to three crosses seen alongside the road and tells the story of a crash survivor. Travis opens the song by singing, "A farmer and a teacher, a hooker and a preacher, riding on a midnight bus bound for Mexico ... " and it unfolds like a heartbreaking mystery. The song won the Country Music Association's song of the year award and a Dove Award as well.

? "Forever and Ever, Amen" ? Driven by a subtle but bouncy bass line, this love song is told from the perspective of a free spirit trying to convince the woman he loves that he's ready to settle down. "I'm gonna love you forever and ever/forever and ever, amen," Travis sings in his mellow baritone on the chorus, and by the end of the song he's got you convinced. Released in 1987, the song was Travis' third No. 1 and won the Grammy Award for best country & western song and the Academy of Country Music's song of the year.

? "Angels" ? This post-9/11 song is Travis as evangelist. The song begins with a bunch of friends sitting around talking about "politics, religion love and life" in the wake of the 2001 terrorist attacks when one says he doesn't believe in angels. Travis preaches, "Are you telling me you've never seen an angel?/Never felt the presence of one standing by?/No robe of white, no halo in sight?/Well, you missed the most obvious thing/Man, are you blind?/Just look in your mother's eyes."

? "On the Other Hand" ? This was Travis' first No. 1 song in the U.S., but it required a little extra work to reach the top of the charts. Released in 1985, the song was Travis' first single as a Warner Bros. recording artist, and appeared on his game-changing album "Storms of Life." It initially drew little notice, but after Travis neared the top of the charts with his next single, he decided to re-release it in 1986. The rest is country music history.

? "I Told You So" ? This Travis-penned breakup song was released four times over the years ? twice by Travis, once by Carrie Underwood and with Underwood as a duet. That duet helped return Travis to the spotlight in the latter years of the last decade. He performed the song with Underwood on "American Idol" and at The Academy of Country Music Awards. It also returned him to the stage at the Grammy Awards in 2010 when it won best country collaboration with vocals. The lyric "Now I found somebody new and you will never break my heart in two again ... " sums up the mood.

The rockslide closed a four-mile stretch of U.S. 24 Wednesday afternoon. El Paso County sheriff's officials say there was no immediate report of injuries.

The American Red Cross opened a shelter for people seeking higher ground.

The National Weather Service had issued flash flood warnings for areas scarred by the Waldo Canyon Fire last year and the Black Forest Fire this year, since soil and vegetation that normally would absorb rainfall there has been burned away.

Apple handed defeat in e-books ruling - MarketWatch

By Dan Gallagher, MarketWatch

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) ? Apple Inc. was handed a defeat on Wednesday, when a federal judge ruled that the company ?played a central role? in helping publishers conspire to raise the prices of e-books.

The ruling stemmed from a lawsuit by the U.S. Department of Justice against Apple /quotes/zigman/68270/quotes/nls/aapl AAPL +1.57% ?and the five major book publishers. The publishers settled with the government; only Apple proceeded to trial over the matter.

Apple CEO Tim Cook shows the iPad mini on Oct. 23, 2012.

Apple shares were trading down a fraction by Wednesday afternoon at $421.80.

In her ruling, Federal Judge Denise Cote of the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York found that book publishers would not have succeeded in raising the price of e-books without the help of Apple, which secured deals with the publishers in the spring of 2010 to help support the launch of the first iPad tablet.

The ruling followed a bench trial that lasted most of the month of June. The trial included testimony from top Apple executives, including Eddy Cue, who runs the company?s Internet services business. Also included were three executives from Amazon?s /quotes/zigman/63011/quotes/nls/amzn AMZN +2.45% ?Kindle business and one from Google Inc. /quotes/zigman/93888/quotes/nls/goog GOOG +1.42% , though neither of the latter companies were a party to the case. Read the ruling here.

The iPad was considered the first e-book platform that could compete effectively with the Kindle from Amazon.com. Amazon launched its first Kindle in 2007, and had angered book publishers by selling e-books for the device at $9.99 and less. It was able to do so because e-books at the time were sold under what is called a wholesale model, where a retailer pays a publisher a fixed price for a book and then sets its own retail price.

Apple loses ruling on e-book pricing

A federal judge found Apple colluded with five major U.S. publishers to artificially drive up the prices of e-books in the months ahead of its entering the market in 2010. Ashby Jones discusses the details on MoneyBeat.

Apple offered the publishers a deal under what is called an ?agency model? that allowed the publishers to set their own prices, and give a percentage to retailers and third-party merchants like Apple.

?At their very first meetings in mid-December 2009, the publishers conveyed to Apple their abhorrence of Amazon?s pricing, and Apple assured the publishers it was willing to work with them to raise those prices, suggesting prices such as $12.99 and $14.99,? Cote wrote in the ruling.

The book publishers named in the case included Hachette Book Group, News Corp.? s /quotes/zigman/18008448/quotes/nls/nws NWS -1.52% ? HarperCollins, Holtzbrinck Publishers, Pearson?s /quotes/zigman/155525 UK:PSON +0.98% ?Penguin Group and CBS?s /quotes/zigman/393390/quotes/nls/cbs CBS +0.45% Simon & Schuster Inc.

News Corp. is also the owner of MarketWatch, publisher of this report.

The ruling painted the publishers as desperate to combat Amazon?s low prices. Realizing that they could do little on their own, emails submitted as evidence in the trial showed that top executives of the publishers met and communicated frequently to coordinate their strategies for dealing with Amazon.

One of these strategies involved ?windowing,? or delaying the release of a new e-book until the hardcover version had been on sale for several weeks. But the publishers became worried that such a strategy could ?alienate an entire portion (and a growing one) of our audience,? according to one of the emails cited in the ruling.

Enter Apple, which was preparing to launch its first iPad in early 2010. It sought the support of book publishers in order to launch the iBookstore to help provide content to the device along with its large iTunes business.

?Apple seized the moment and brilliantly played its hand,? Cote wrote in the ruling, noting how the company was ?taking advantage of the publisher defendants? fear of and frustration over Amazon?s pricing, as well as the tight window of opportunity created by the impending launch of the iPad,? which was first showcased at an event in January of 2010.

Apple's Eddy Cue at the Worldwide Developers conference last month.

Apple?s Eddy Cue, according to the ruling, was unwilling to allow e-books to be windowed, and wanted prices to be below those for physical books. In his meetings with publishers, Cue conveyed that Apple was willing to sell e-books for up to $14.99 each ? a notable premium to the prices Amazon was charging.

?As a master negotiator, Cue came well prepared for his meetings,? Cote wrote. ?He knew how to convey Apple?s conditions for entry and at the same time give the publishers an incentive for entering, almost overnight, into a partnership with Apple.?

Lastly, Apple pressed the publishers to end their wholesale agreements with other e-book retailers like Amazon, realizing that it would be at a pricing disadvantage with the iBookstore if Kindle books could still be bought for $9.99.

During the trial, Cue disputed that Apple was seeking to raise prices across the industry, insisting that the company was only seeking to build a competitive business for its own iBookstore.

?In this and several other aspects of Cue?s testimony, regrettably, he was not credible,? Cote wrote. ?The documentary record and the commercial context of the negotiations leave room for no other conclusion. Apple?s pitch to the Publishers was ? from beginning to end ? a vision for a new industry-wide price schedule.?

A trial on damages is expected to follow, though Apple is expected to appeal the ruling. A company spokesman told Dow Jones Newswires that ?Apple did not conspire to fix e-book pricing and we will continue to fight against these false accusations.?

Canada regulator denies Chevron bid to secure oil for refinery

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - Canada's National Energy Board has turned down Chevron Corp's bid to secure priority access to oil shipped on the Trans Mountain pipeline for its British Columbia refinery, arguing the facility could operate using existing supply sources.

Chevron had sought to secure supply for its 55,000 barrel per day refinery in Burnaby because it was having difficulty ensuring it could source enough oil on the chronically over-booked pipeline, which carries Alberta crude to British Columbia and Puget Sound, to keep the refinery operating.

The board, which regulates the Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP -owned line, said the refinery had been consistently able to meet its 40,000 barrel per day minimum run rate despite the lack of secure space on the 300,000 bpd Trans Mountain line.

"The Board was of the view that it is the responsibility of Chevron to design a portfolio of supply options that will best mitigate its supply risk and ensure the long-term viability of the Burnaby Refinery," the regulator said in a statement.

Chevron sought priority access for the refinery, which supplies a third of British Columbia's gasoline, last year, after Kinder Morgan reduced the amount of space on the line available to spot shippers.

Space on the line has been rationed since 2010, with would-be shippers seeking to ship more crude than the line could carry. The board said Kinder Morgan must revise the procedures it uses to allocate space on the line or explain why its current methods are adequate by the end of September.

A spokesman for Chevron said the company will comment after it has reviewed the decision.

John Klein: Is college baseball making a comeback in this region?

By JOHN KLEIN Senior Sports Columnist on Jul 11, 2013, at 2:29 AM??Updated on 7/11/13 at 7:17 AM

This summer has marked a new era of college baseball in this region, and one can only hope it matches what happened around here in the late 1970s.

Oklahoma State hired some guy from Yavapai Junior College, a former phys ed teacher took over at Arkansas and the hitting coach at Oklahoma started a program at Wichita State.

Not since Gary Ward revived baseball at Oklahoma State, Norm DeBriyn resurrected Arkansas and Gene Stephenson started the program at Wichita State in the late 1970s has college baseball in this region undergone such change.

Changes at Oklahoma and Wichita State, just a year after a change at OSU, would seem to indicate a new commitment to college baseball in this region.

We can only hope it ushers in similar results.

From 1978 through the 1990s, college baseball flourished in this region. All five teams in this region went to the College World Series. Oklahoma and Wichita State won national titles.

Oklahoma State went to a record seven straight College World Series (reaching the finals three times) and won a record 16 straight conference baseball titles. Arkansas went to the College World Series four times (reaching the finals in 1979). Oral Roberts reached the College World Series in 1978, the start of a magnificent run of 14 conference championships and 22 NCAA Tournaments for the Golden Eagles.

And, Wichita State, coached by two Oklahomans, raided this state for talent, won the 1989 national title and became OSU's chief rival for supremacy in this region.

Now, after a period of transition, all five baseball-playing schools in this region appear ready to once again make a push to be among college baseball's elite.

OU hired Pete Hughes after Sunny Golloway, a successful but unpopular coach, left the Sooners for Auburn.

"The goals are simple," said Hughes. "We want to compete to win championships.

"OU baseball is built to go to Omaha (College World Series) and win national championships."

Wichita State pushed Gene Stephenson out the door after 36 years. In comes former OU player Todd Butler, who has spent the last eight years as an Arkansas assistant.

"To start off without a ball, without a bat and then to win a national championship - I can't say enough about it," said Butler of Stephenson.

All of this comes just a year after Oklahoma State hired Josh Holliday and brought on former Oral Roberts coach Rob Walton as pitching coach. Plus, the Cowboys are on the verge of starting construction of a new stadium.

In other words, all the schools in this region appear serious about playing college baseball at the highest levels.

That's good news and would appear very possible.

There is enough talent in this region to stock these teams with quality players.

In fact, some would argue there is more high school baseball talent than any other prep sport in our state. Certainly, in recent years, Major League Baseball has found Oklahoma to be a fertile ground on draft day. There's a number of current major leaguers from Oklahoma, including perennial all-star Matt Holliday of the St. Louis Cardinals, who is from Stillwater and a former Tulsa Driller.

OU pitcher Jonathan Gray, from Chandler, was the third pick in the recent MLB draft.

When college baseball was flourishing in this region during the early 1980s, ORU was stocked with players from California, where then-coach Larry Cochell had fabulous connections. Of course, ORU's most famous baseball alum, Mike Moore, was from Oklahoma and was the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball draft.

Oklahoma State under Ward, with assistant Tom Holliday, were able to land top prospects from all over the country, especially the northeast (New Jersey) and the west (Oregon down to southern California). In fact, one recruiting class including future big leaguers Pete Incaviglia and Darryl Strawberry from California. But the core group of players were from Oklahoma.

Arkansas went to the national finals in 1979 with a handful of starters from Oklahoma.

Wichita State's best teams were stocked with future big leaguers from Oklahoma like Charlie O'Brien from Tulsa and Joe Carter from Oklahoma City. Of course, Stephenson was from Guthrie and pitching coach Brent Kemnitz was from Perry.

Arkansas continues to lure players from Oklahoma, although not nearly in the numbers it did in the past.

Holliday grew up in Stillwater and played at OSU. Butler is a former OU player and Kemnitz is the lone holdover on the Wichita State staff.

OU has been successful in recent years because of Oklahoma players.

The moves would seem to signal a renewed effort for college baseball.

That should be good for high school baseball prospects and fans all over this region of the country.

The Importance Of Piano Reviews - Cooper Piano

The Importance Of Piano Reviews

When you decide to buy certain items, such as an espresso machine, a theater system, or evenpiano reviews a piano, you would probably read tons of reviews from novice and veteran product reviewers prior to making a final purchase. Purchasing a huge item such as piano should be taken seriously and I would advise that you read a number of reliable piano reviews to help you make a final decision as to which piano is best for your music needs.

Here are a number of reasons why you should always read reviews before shopping for this type of musical instrument:

Reviews help You choose a suitable Unit for Your Home

Although you are able to determine the piano type that suits your musical, space, and decorative needs on your own, the reading of trustworthy piano reviews can help you consider other pianos that you might not have thought of in the past. At times, these previously unfamiliar pianos can be even more affordable but just as good, if not better, than the ones that you have in mind.

Reviews allow You to buy a Valuable Piano

When you hire a professional to evaluate the piano you are interested in buying, you will probably end up with a more valuable musical instrument. Registered piano technicians have the necessary expertise to verify if a piano is valuable and that it is worth every penny that is spent to purchase it. Aside from checking the keys, pedals, strings, soundboards, and other parts of the piano, a highly experienced RPT will check the unit?s external attributes to ensure that you are not overspending on a dented piano with major internal problems.

Reviews are Essential if you are purchasing a Used Piano

Obtaining several top quality piano reviews before making the decision to buy a used piano are the best decisions a buyer could make for herself. I always inform all my clients that they have to acquire appraisals on all the secondhand units before they make their final decision, because they might end up with units that necessitate several types of repairs. This can prove to be very costly and at times, it can end up costing them much more than when they buy a new piano!

Where should you obtain Piano Appraisals?grand pianos

Aside from talking to experienced piano dealers, you can hire an RPT, which can be found via the Internet or in most local newspapers. Piano dealers have their own technicians who can help you to appraise any piano that you are thinking of purchasing. If you are considering buying from a private seller, it is definitely a great idea to get the piano appraised thoroughly before you make any type of payment. You should also talk to your neighbors, friends, and relatives, as they might be able to recommend a number of RPTs that are active in your area.

How much will it cost to get a Piano Reviewed?

If you are buying a piano from a private seller, it can cost about $100 to $150 to hire an RPT to look at the piano on your behalf. However, if you choose to buy a piano from a professional dealer, the services of an RPT are typically free of charge. I recommend that you carry out your own thorough research on the cost of RPTs before you hire one, as this will give you a much more accurate idea of the additional cost you need to budget for.

Piano reviews are essential if you want a piano that will last a lifetime. Since a piano is a valuable musical instrument that can be passed down from one generation to the next, you should always buy one that is valuable and fits each of your musical needs.

Have you read any good piano reviews lately and where did you discover them??

Chinese Company Buys Iconic London Building

In the latest move into London by Chinese companies, insurer Ping An has purchased the Grade-1 listed Lloyd's of London tower from Commerz Real AG for ?260 million ($385 million).

Known as the "Inside-Out" building the tower was designed by architect Richard Rogers and opened in 1986. It's modernistic, industrial look with exposed pipes and lifts invoked comparisons to the Pompidou Center in Paris, which was designed by Rogers and Renzo Piano.

Commerz Real bought the building, which is located in the City of London, for ?231 million pounds in 2005. The Society of Lloyd's has leased the building until 2031, consultancy Savills said.??

Lloyds-of-London-tower.jpgThe purchase represents the latest move by Chinese companies into London commercial property. Last month the Dalian Wanda Group announced plans to take over a ?700 million hotel and residential tower project.

China will spend as much as $5 billion on overseas real estate this year, a 25 percent increase from 2012, Jones Lang LaSalle predicts.

London "seems to be one of those global markets that everyone in the world is interested in and it seems only natural that Chinese investors would view it similarly," Michael Klibaner, head of greater China research at Jones Lang LaSalle. "It's kind of just saying 'We arrived.'"

Bluetooth Low Energy coming to select Nokia Lumias via software update

Bluetooth 40 coming to select Lumias in upcoming Amber update, says Nokia Hong Kong

It looks like Nokia's Windows Phones have some secrets to spill in a future software update. At a gathering in Hong Kong, as reported by BlogJack, the company said that Bluetooth LE support (part of the 4.0 standard) will come to the Lumia 520, 620 and 720. Strangely absent from that list are the Lumia 820, 920 and the 925 -- all of which are powered by Qualcomm chips that support BT 4.0 at the hardware level. We're also not entirely sure if this update is a part of a more mature Windows Phone release that Microsoft plans on pushing out later this year or whether it's specific to the "Amber" refresh that's tailored to Lumia devices. We've asked Nokia for further details, and we also plan on getting some face-to-face time at its unveiling of a whole new Lumia this Thursday.

Sony 3D Camcorder Binoculars – get the best of all worlds close up and personal

sony3dcamcorderbinoculars Sony 3D Camcorder Binoculars get the best of all worlds close up and personal

The whole 3D thing may be dead (or dying) but there are still products out there which make good use of the technology if you?re in need. These Sony 3D Camcorder Binoculars are a good case in point. There?s no doubt that combining high power binoculars with a decent resolution camera should deliver great results, but up till now it seems no one has been able to do it properly.

This product looks like it might change things a little. The device combines a high definition camcorder which can also capture 7.1 megapixel still images, with high powered optics capable of 10x zoom. There?s also optical image stabilization to keep things nice and steady and an HDMI port for connection to a television so you and the family (or your bird watching friends?) can enjoy the footage together.

There are also external mic and headphones sockets, to ensure you can capture some top notch audio along with the visuals, and the unit supports up to 64GB SDHC memory cards, which definitely should be enough for most needs. You get around 3.5 hours of recording out of a single charge and the price for all this technology comes in at $1,400.

USA: Barracks - Fort Simcoe State Park, Washington

In the 1850's, conflicts arose between the Indians and the newly arrived American and European miners and settlers. In response to these problems, the Army built Fort SImcoe on this site approximately 35 miles southwest of the city of Yakima, Washington. Construction began in 1856, and the fort served as an advanced post of the Ninth Infantry Regiment until 1859 when it was turned over to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Indian Agency provided services to the Reservation Indians from reading and writing to trade skills. During this period some of the fort buildings were removed while other agency structures were constructed. In 1923 the Indian Agency moved to Toppenish and although the fort was abandoned, efforts soon began to preserve it. Restoration projects by an Indian Civilian Conservation Corps crew in the 1930's saved some of the fort structures. In 1953, the land was leased to the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission from the Yakima Nation.

This panorama was taken in USA

This is an overview of USA

The United States is one of the most diverse countries on earth, jam packed full of amazing sights from St. Patrick's cathedral in New York to Mount Hollywood California. The Northeast region is where it all started. Thirteen British colonies fought the American Revolution from here and won their independence in the first successful colonial rebellion in history. Take a look at these rolling hills carpeted with foliage along the Hudson river here, north of New York City. The American south is known for its polite people and slow pace of life. Probably they move slowly because it's so hot. Southerners tend not to trust people from "up north" because they talk too fast. Here's a cemetery in Georgia where you can find graves of soldiers from the Civil War.The West Coast is sort of like another country that exists to make the east coast jealous. California is full of nothing but grizzly old miners digging for gold, a few gangster rappers, and then actors. That is to say, the West Coast functions as the imagination of the US, like a weird little brother who teases everybody then gets famous for making freaky art.The central part of the country is flat farmland all the way over to the Rocky Mountains. Up in the northwest corner you can find creative people in places like Portland and Seattle, along with awesome snowboarding and good beer. Text by Steve Smith.

Archbishop Jerome Listecki addresses church abuse scandal

MILWAUKEE (WITI) ? Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki says the Catholic Church is ready to turn the page a day after thousands of pages of church documents were released.

The released documents provide new information about how the Milwaukee Archdiocese handled cases of sexual abuse. They detail the cases of sexual abuse by 41 priests. They show how church leaders responded and how they shuffled child-molesting priests from parish to parish for decades.

Also included in the documents was a letter from then Archbishop Timothy Dolan that some say proves Dolan committed federal bankruptcy fraud. The documents say he conspired with the Vatican to transfer $57 million from Archdiocese coffers to a new fund called the ?Cemetery Perpetual Care Trust.?

Here?s some of the conversation between FOX6?s Mike Lowe and Archbishop Listecki that took place on Tuesday afternoon, July 2nd.

Mike Lowe: It appears as though, then Archbishop Timothy Dolan was trying to remove problem priests, right? And, he ran into ? if not outright resistance from Rome, then certainly sluggish responses ? does culpability lie with Rome?

Archbishop Listecki:?No, I don?t think so.? I think you?re governed by a set of canonical norms and laws that protect individuals, your rights, my rights as individuals within the church. And the church certainly imposes those norms upon individuals and makes sure there is an adherence to them.

Mike Lowe: If blame is spread around to everyone, it almost goes to no one, it almost absolves everyone? ? names are named in these documents.

Archbishop Listecki: Yeah, but I think what happened is you did see in doing due diligence, then Archbishop Dolan? ? now Cardinal Dolan ? addressing the issue and coming to some type of resolution.? That?s why we have the list that we do. The vast majority is because of what Cardinal Dolan did.

Mike Lowe: Then Archbishop Dolan transferred $57 million in church assets into a trust fund.? Why did he do that?

Archbishop Listecki: Because it was always maintained as a trust.? He was only doing due diligence, and due diligence is that he was just making it legal, and those legal papers were reflecting the way it was always kept as a trust.

Mike Lowe: As you know, the accusation is he was trying to shield assets from lawsuits.

Archbishop Listecki: No. As you heard Cardinal Dolan?s response to it, there?s no truth to that whatsoever.

Mike Lowe: He ? in the report ? says quote ?I see an improved protection from any legal claims and liability.? How do you explain that?

Archbishop Listecki: When I say due diligence, he was making sure that the trust always would be maintained as a trust.

Advocates for the victims are calling that a ?smoking gun? that shows Dolan was attempting to shield funds prior to bankruptcy. They?re asking that it be investigated as fraud.

LAC-MEGANTIC, Quebec (AP) ? As firefighters doused still burning oil tanker cars, more bodies were recovered Sunday in this devastated town in eastern Quebec, raising the death toll to five after a runaway train derailed, igniting explosions and fires that destroyed the downtown district. With dozens of people reported missing, authorities feared they could find more bodies once they reached the hardest-hit areas.

Quebec provincial police Lt. Michel Brunet said Sunday that about 40 people have been reported missing, but cautioned that the number could fluctuate up or down.

"We met many people who had reported family members missing. Right now I can tell you about 40," Brunet said.

Brunet confirmed two more deaths early Sunday afternoon after confirming two people were found dead overnight. One death was confirmed Saturday.

Fires were preventing rescuers from reaching part of the 73-car train, and billowing black smoke could still be seen long after the derailment.

The eruptions early Saturday morning sent residents of Lac-Megantic scrambling through the streets under the intense heat of towering fireballs and a red glow that illuminated the night sky.

Local Fire Chief Denis Lauzon likened the charred scene to "a war zone."

"This is really terrible. Our community is grieving and it is taking its toll on us," Mayor Colette Roy-Laroche said.

The search for victims in the charred debris was hampered because several tanker cars were still burning Sunday morning, sparking fears of more potentially fatal blasts.

Two of the five cars that exploded are still on fire 36 hours later, Lauzon said. He said firefighters are staying 500 feet (150 meters) from the burning tankers, which are being doused with water and foam to keep them from overheating and exploding.

"It's a mess," he said.

The multiple blasts came over a span of several hours in the town of 6,000, which is about 155 miles (250 kilometers) east of Montreal and about 10 miles (16 kilometers) west of the Maine border. About 30 buildings were destroyed after tanker cars laden with oil caught fire in the picturesque lakeside town in Quebec's Eastern Townships.

The derailment caused several tanker rail cars to explode in the downtown district, a popular area packed with bars that often bustles on summer weekend nights. Police said the first explosion tore through the town shortly after 1 a.m. local time. The fire then spread to several homes.

Brunet said he couldn't say where the bodies were found exactly because the families have not been notified.

The cause of the accident was believed to be a runaway train, the railway's operator said. The president and CEO of Rail World Inc., the parent company of Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway, said the train had been parked uphill of Lac-Megantic. The tanker cars then sped downhill into the town before derailing.

"If brakes aren't properly applied on a train, it's going to run away," said Edward Burkhardt. "But we think the brakes were properly applied on this train."

Burkhardt, who was mystified by the disaster, said the train was parked because the engineer had finished his run.

"We've had a very good safety record for these 10 years," he said of the decade-old railroad. "Well, I think we've blown it here."

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced he is heading to the town Sunday.

Because of limited pipeline capacity in North Dakota's Bakken region and in Canada, oil producers are using railroads to transport much of the oil to refineries on the East, Gulf and West coasts, as well as inland. Harper has called railroad transit "far more environmentally challenging" while trying to persuade the Obama administration to approve the controversial Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to the Gulf Coast.

Myrian Marotte, a spokeswoman for the Canadian Red Cross in Lac-Megantic, said there are about 2,000 evacuees and said 163 stayed at their operations center overnight.

"There are those are still looking for loved ones," Marotte said.

Marotte said many of the evacuees are staying with family and friends. "Some people have lost everything," she said.

Lines of tall trees in the area looked like giant standing matchsticks, blackened from bottom to tip. Witnesses said the eruptions shook residents out of their slumber and sent them darting through the streets.

Patrons gathered at a nearby bar were sent running for their lives after the thunderous crash and wall of fire blazed through the early morning sky.

Bernard Theberge, who was outside on the bar's patio at the time of the crash, feared for the safety of those inside the popular Musi-Cafe when the first explosion went off.

"People started running and the fire ignited almost instantaneously," he said.

"It was like a movie," said Theberge, who considered himself fortunate to escape with only second-degree burns on his right arm. "Explosions as if it were scripted ? but this was live."

Firefighters and rescue workers from several neighboring municipalities, including Sherbrooke and Saint-Georges-de-Beauce, were called in to help deal with the disaster. Firefighters from northern Maine were also deployed to the Quebec town, according to a spokesman at the sheriff's office in Franklin County.

The train belongs to Montreal Maine & Atlantic. According to the railroad's website, the company owns more than 500 miles (800 kilometers) of track serving Maine, Vermont, Quebec and New Brunswick.

Last week a train carrying petroleum products derailed in Calgary, Alberta, when a flood-damaged bridge sagged toward the still-swollen Bow River. The derailed rail cars were removed without spilling their cargo.

The Quebec accident was likely to have an impact across the border. In Maine, environmentalists and state officials had previously raised concerns about the threat of an accident and a spill from railroad tank cars carrying crude oil across the state.

The Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway carried nearly 3 million barrels of oil across Maine last year. Each tank car holds some 30,000 gallons (113,600 liters) of oil.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has begun developing protection plans for the areas where the trains travel, spokeswoman Samantha Warren said recently.

What?s next for Cub Swanson after UFC 162 win?

At UFC 162, Cub Swanson won an unorthodox, but thrilling bout. He earned a TKO win over Dennis Siver in the third round by knocking him down with a right hand, then following him to the ground. The knockout followed a back and forth bout that somehow saw these two strikers hit the ground. Swanson was able to come back and win, giving him his fifth win in a row.

Swanson's last loss came to Ricardo Lamas at UFC on Fox 1 in November of 2011. Since then, he's rattled off wins over George Roop, Ross Pearson, Charles Oliveira, Dustin Poirier, and now Siver. Four of those five wins came by a knockout or TKO.

The big question coming out of his win is if this performance qualified him for a title shot against UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo. Though every fighter wants a shot at the title, getting it against Aldo would be a little sweeter for Swanson than most. In 2009, when they were still in the WEC, Aldo knocked out Swanson with a flying double knee in just eight seconds.

Swanson's biggest obstacle to getting to Aldo is just how many people have a claim on the next UFC featherweight title shot. Champion Jose Aldo is set to face Chan Sung Jung in August. Jung replaced Anthony Pettis, who missed on his chance to fight for the title because of an injury. Ricardo Lamas also has the resume for a title shot.

Even if Swanson can't get at Aldo -- or Jung, if he wins in August -- he should take a major jump up competition for his next bout, which could set the stage for a chance at the belt.

Who do you want to see Swanson fight next? Speak up on Facebook or Twitter.
