Military & NHL alumni honour fallen soldiers with hockey game

Hockey was more than just a game at the Okotoks Centennial Arena on Saturday as members of the military and ex-NHLers shared the ice to raise money and awareness for two important organizations: : the Family Military Resource Centre, and Soldier On, which helps ill and injured soldiers.

Soliders and pro-hockey alumni were on the ice to raise money for the charities, and to remember local fallen soldier, Steven Marshall, who died in Afghanistan three years ago Sunday.

?I think it's a way I can raise awareness of where we've been, what these kids sacrificed, and not let it be forgotten. ? Says Steven?s father, Murray Marshall. ?That's been my big challenge for the last three years, they weren't just numbers, they're someone's son or daughter.?

The game is the brainchild of Sharon Van Olm, whose two sons served in Afghanistan. ?Post-traumatic Stress Disorder is huge. People don't know. These military boys that have been over there, they can't watch or listen to fireworks, it doesn't sound like fireworks for them.? Says Van Olm.

Pro Hockey alumni like former Flames Dana Murzyn and Dwayne Hay were happy to help out, as was retired Vancouver Canuck and Okotoks resident Rob Tudor.

?They've protected us, now it's time for us to protect them.? Says Tudor.

Some of Steven Marshall's friends also participated, like Corporal Fraser Zerebecki. He says when Marshall was killed, many friends overseas weren't able to come home and pay their respects. The game is one way to honour Steve.

?I think this is a great fit. Steve was an absolutely crazy hockey fan, just a die hard Flames fan, so I think he'd be very happy to see this going on.?

The jerseys from Saturday?s games will be autographed by the star players and auctioned off as part of the fundraising efforts.

Stock exchange's backup: Twitter, Facebook

NYSE will use Twitter and Facebook if email fails

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has said that it plans to use Twitter and Facebook for finding buyers and sellers to close daily trading, following a technical glitch that saw its usual method of email fail.

At the end of trading last week an email notification was meant to alert investors to a stock with an outsize number of unfilled buy orders, according to the Wall Street Journal. However, this email was delayed by seven minutes.

Such delays at close could have caused the stock to leap higher or drop lower than its final trading level. This led to NYSE sending traders a notification on Thursday, which said that if email alerts fail again it will use social media distribution channels to help address buy and sell imbalances.

The move reflects a growing trend where traditional exchanges are being forced to embrace digital technologies.

NYSE recently announced Jon Robson, a former Thomson Rueters chief, as its new head of NYSE Technologies. The position had been left vacant since Stanley Young left NYSE for a role at Bloomberg In May.

NASA rover finds old streambed on Martian surface

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? NASA's Curiosity rover mission has found evidence a stream once ran vigorously across the area on Mars where the rover is driving. There is earlier evidence for the presence of water on Mars, but this evidence -- images of rocks containing ancient streambed gravels -- is the first of its kind.

Scientists are studying the images of stones cemented into a layer of conglomerate rock. The sizes and shapes of stones offer clues to the speed and distance of a long-ago stream's flow.

"From the size of gravels it carried, we can interpret the water was moving about 3 feet per second, with a depth somewhere between ankle and hip deep," said Curiosity science co-investigator William Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley. "Plenty of papers have been written about channels on Mars with many different hypotheses about the flows in them. This is the first time we're actually seeing water-transported gravel on Mars. This is a transition from speculation about the size of streambed material to direct observation of it."

The finding site lies between the north rim of Gale Crater and the base of Mount Sharp, a mountain inside the crater. Earlier imaging of the region from Mars orbit allows for additional interpretation of the gravel-bearing conglomerate. The imagery shows an alluvial fan of material washed down from the rim, streaked by many apparent channels, sitting uphill of the new finds.

The rounded shape of some stones in the conglomerate indicates long-distance transport from above the rim, where a channel named Peace Vallis feeds into the alluvial fan. The abundance of channels in the fan between the rim and conglomerate suggests flows continued or repeated over a long time, not just once or for a few years.

The discovery comes from examining two outcrops, called "Hottah" and "Link," with the telephoto capability of Curiosity's mast camera during the first 40 days after landing. Those observations followed up on earlier hints from another outcrop, which was exposed by thruster exhaust as Curiosity, the Mars Science Laboratory Project's rover, touched down.

"Hottah looks like someone jack-hammered up a slab of city sidewalk, but it's really a tilted block of an ancient streambed," said Mars Science Laboratory Project Scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

The gravels in conglomerates at both outcrops range in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball. Some are angular, but many are rounded.

"The shapes tell you they were transported and the sizes tell you they couldn't be transported by wind. They were transported by water flow," said Curiosity science co-investigator Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz.

The science team may use Curiosity to learn the elemental composition of the material, which holds the conglomerate together, revealing more characteristics of the wet environment that formed these deposits. The stones in the conglomerate provide a sampling from above the crater rim, so the team may also examine several of them to learn about broader regional geology.

The slope of Mount Sharp in Gale Crater remains the rover's main destination. Clay and sulfate minerals detected there from orbit can be good preservers of carbon-based organic chemicals that are potential ingredients for life.

"A long-flowing stream can be a habitable environment," said Grotzinger. "It is not our top choice as an environment for preservation of organics, though. We're still going to Mount Sharp, but this is insurance that we have already found our first potentially habitable environment."

During the two-year prime mission of the Mars Science Laboratory, esearchers will use Curiosity's 10 instruments to investigate whether areas in Gale Crater have ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech, built Curiosity and manages the Mars Science Laboratory Project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington.

Delta ATL-SAV/ATL-AVL Service Cuts ? Civil Aviation Forum ...

As per the OAG timetable Savannah now has one less daily flight along with AVL.

Delta used to operate multiple 757 flights daily and an MD-80 terminator flight via AGS (Augusta, GA) to SAV (Savannah, GA). What has happened here for DL to reduce capacity, yet charge a semi-heavy premium for this flight?

Concerning AVL down to 7 daily to ATL, albeit with one daily DC9 service, why does DL reduce frequency when AVL charges a premium for this flight? AVL does not have a low-cost carrier, except for Allegiant to Orlando, so what has happened in AVL for this reduction?

The 757 ATL-SAV-ATL was always full and the CR2 was always full for the most part (not speaking in terms of yield, but demand) so why are these cities seeing a single daily flight reduction?

And in terms of AVL, does RegionalElite ground staff still handle the single mainline flight, or are there newly hired DL Mainline staff handling the DC9 flight?

When you price flights for example AVL-LAX, the lowest average fare is $480 r/t in Econ. whilst SAV-LAX average is $480 r/t. In terms of yield why would DL reduce service for a destination that rewards DL with pax willing to pay the higher fare for sheer convenience, etc.?

Perhaps someone from Revenue Management can shed some light on these destinations.

Quoting AirAfreak (Thread starter):

That's cheap. Sometimes in the 90s i was quoted something like 550 US$ for ATL-SAV rtn by DL and chose instead the thrills of flying Valuejet for much less.
Quoting AirAfreak (Thread starter):
And in terms of AVL, does RegionalElite ground staff still handle the single mainline flight, or are there newly hired DL Mainline staff handling the DC9 flight?

Yes, Regional Elite is still handling the DL mainline flights in and out of AVL.

This is a relatively low level of service for AVL-ATL (up from 8-9x non-peak season to 10x daily on a CRJ in summer and fall), but not terribly surprising given DL has kept mainline on the schedule into the spring.
The DL of 2012 is not the DL of 2005, let alone even the DL of 2009.

DL, even with the merger of NW, has reduced systemwide capactiy and is focused on profitable flying. This is not the loss generating, bankrupt DL of a decade ago.

As fuel prices have increased, it has directly increased the cost of flying. Supply and demand, as the prices increase to cover costs, demand will decrease.

Additionally, SAV used to see FL serive and during that time, DL used to offer more capacity and lower fares to be competitive with FL. Now that FL is out of SAV, prices increased significantly with the lack of lower cost competition.

While the OAG threads are great, one must consider that adjustments are frequently made in all markets.
Adjustments are alway made on a seasonal / monthly / day-of-the-week basis. DL is very aggresive at matching capacity and making adjustments in frequency and equipment types on a given route.

Don't get too worried if a flight is reduced in the Jan/Feb timeframe, the slowest travel period of the year. Keep in mind that demand is often 20-30% less during this time than during the peak summer travel season since leisure travel is very low during this time of the year.

Even more so in markets like AVL and SAV which have a significant leisure travel segment of inbound visitors. The winter is off-peak for both markets.

Quoting AirAfreak (Thread starter):

AVL is getting mainline back, so they swapped out 2 CRJs (2 x 50 seats) for a DC-9-50 (125 seats). DL is going to be significantly reducing their 50 seat RJs over the next several years, so look for more of this to happen as 50 seaters are replaced by a combination of 66/70/76 seaters and some mainline equipment (DC9, 717).
Quoting AirAfreak (Thread starter):
And in terms of AVL, does RegionalElite ground staff still handle the single mainline flight, or are there newly hired DL Mainline staff handling the DC9 flight?

Outsourced vendor, whoever it is in AVL. It does not have to be mainline employees ground handling, and they will not bring it back in-house with only 1 or a handful of mainline flights.

DL has a massive amount of data at their disposal for capacity and yield management. I'd actually say that $480 r/t on SAV-LAX is actually not that bad, considering the actual cost of flying. $480 r/t /less taxes is roughly $440 to DL, which on roughly a 4000 mile round trip is around a 11-12 cent CASM. DL is barely breaking even, if at all on this fare. They certainly are not ripping anyone off on that fare, its pretty close to the cost of flying that route. SAV-LAX also has numerous competition as all the other airlines can get you there on connecting service over their respective hubs.

Now when you see the some of the short hops that lack competition that are more than $900 roundtrip, then you can say they are certainly charging a premium.

So this must be good news for the GSP market, as DL's ATL flights are now a mix of CRJ/CR9/D95 & MD88, and after Oct 1, will also see A319 and A320 added in as well! Looks like after that time, there will only be 1 flight/day (on weekdays anyway) without F class. What with that, plus WN and G4's mainline a/c, GSP is almost looking like the early 90s again!
I remember when I lived in Savannah in the 2003-04 range taking several 757 flights from SAV-ATL and back. And yes they were usually full. And usually went on to further destinations with same-plane service like SLC, SMF, and SJC.

SAV isn't a particularly large city or metro. Why the large(ish) equipment?

In addition to the millions of tourists that SAV and the Golden Isles get (and most of them fly in through either SAV or JAX as BQK is usually cost prohibitive) Savannah is GA's industrial center, there's a huge military presence, and it has the fastest growing port on the east coast. Savannah has a lot going on.

DL has also traditionally had a very large share (probably 50%+) of the SAV market. And with the nearest large airports being just over 2 hours' drive away (JAX and CHS, neither of which is a hub) and ATL 4 hours away, leakage is minimized. (The exception probably being some to WN in JAX.)

[Edited 2012-09-27 11:31:47]

A lot of people forget that the size of the city may not seem to corelate with the size of the airplanes.
DL is a southern company that has maintain a strong precense in many of it routes that date back 60+ years...
SAV/CHS/CAE/AGS/HSV/MGM/BHM/BNA/GSP are the bread and butter for DL.
ALL of FL stations represent more than 20% of the company revenue. I feel sorry you lost one flight in SAV, and one in
Asheville. But think about it, the company is constantly rightsizing itself.

Domestic Violence And Relationships - Romance - Nairaland

Domestic Violence And Relationships by Mrs.Chima(f): 3:17pm On Sep 25Have you ever been in a domestic violence relationship and if so, how did you remove yourself from it? Have you ever helped someone remove themselves from an abusive relationship? What are your thoughts on domestic violence in marriage or dating?

I have recently encouraged a friend of mine to leave her abusive partner because she would always cover herself with make up and hoodies. I told my husband about this situation and he suggested that I remove myself from the equation and we got into an argument because I felt like he was supporting the abuser.

My husband said that he does not want his wife involve in something that has nothing to do with me and he will hurt a mofo if harm come my way. In some way, I am touched but still mad at him because I feel like if it was his sisters or mother...he would be like Boko Haram with atomic bombs. Why is it when it is someone that is not family...men will turn their heads?

My friend won't press charges and I am afraid for her children. She has two girls and one boy. She shared with me that her son is imitating the abuser by threatening to kill her and she need to sleep with one eye open. That bothers me because I know if she doesn't get out...she will be in a body bag.

I have successfully helped women get out of abusive relationship because their families were involved but she has not family that live in our region. She moved from her hometown to be with her partner and I was introduced to her by a survivor. This is exactly what she looks like and it is no lie.

How can a woman or man get out of an abusive relationship and do you think it is easy to do so even with a sure way out?

Mrs.Chima:
Have you ever been in a domestic violence relationship and if so, how did you remove yourself from it?
Nope I've never been in any.
Mrs.Chima:
Have you ever helped someone remove themselves from an abusive relationship?
Emm...not really.
Mrs.Chima:
What are your thoughts on domestic violence in marriage or dating?
From my thoughts and views...I feel domestic violence and abuse are used for one purpose and one purpose only...to gain and maintain total control over you.
Mrs.Chima:
I have recently encouraged a friend of mine to leave her abusive partner because she would always cover herself with make up and hoodies.
Well...you did the right thing (by asking her to leave), I mean...you cannot allow a spouse to treat you poorly, or you?ll wind up hating yourself, your mate, your relationship and your life.? Since your husband is unlikely to change his behavior without being forced into it, it?s going to be up to you to enforce changes in your marriage.?
Mrs.Chima:
I told my husband about this situation and he suggested that I remove myself from the equation and we got into an argument because I felt like he was supporting the abuser.
If your husband asks you to refrain yourself from that subject, then obey him and avoid bringing it up so peace can reign in your home.
Mrs.Chima:
My husband said that he does not want his wife involve in something that has nothing to do with me and he will hurt a mofo if harm come my way.
He's right you know...what happens in their home is actually none of your business.
Mrs.Chima:
In some way, I am touched but still mad at him because I feel like if it was his sisters or mother ...he would be like Boko Haram with atomic bombs. Why is it when it is someone that is not family...men will turn their heads?
Note the bolded...some men just prefer to stay away from other people's territories. They hate engaging themselves in battles that have nothing to do with them or their loved ones. I won't blame him for that.

If you feel much concern for her, then you can report the matter to the authorities (police, court etc)

Mrs.Chima:
My friend won't press charges and I am afraid for her children.
Are you sure you've convinced her enough? She has been assaulted physically and according to the law, she definitely deserves justice.

Her children is not the issue here...the issue is that she deserves the right to a happy life, she deserves peace of mind...that which her husband has denied her of. So I feel it would be proper if she takes legal action against him.

If she's a christian, she can take the case to God, but in the mean time she must rise up and fight for her right as a woman.

Mrs.Chima:
She has two girls and one boy. She shared with me that her son is imitating the abuser by threatening to kill her and she need to sleep with one eye open. That bothers me because I know if she doesn't get out...she will be in a body bag.
I thought you said you advised her to leave the house for a while?

Don't tell me she's still in that house.

Mrs.Chima:
I have successfully helped women get out of abusive relationship because their families were involved but she has not family that live in our region. She moved from her hometown to be with her partner and I was introduced to her by a survivor. This is exactly what she looks like and it is no lie.
I couldn't actually comprehend your statement here...but from the look of things, it seems you're her hero. I'm sure she would forever be grateful to you.
Mrs.Chima:
How can a woman or man get out of an abusive relationship and do you think it is easy to do so even with a sure way out?
Well...there're many ways, she can decide to pack her things and leave if her partner is a threat to her life.

She can go for counseling. Counseling therapy has been proven over the decades to be a way to help the situation...but most couples refuse the counseling method. They refuse outside help thinking they can work it out or iron their own differences out. Maybe they're ashamed to tell people (their friends and families) what they're going through.

What you should or rather she should note is that if you don't train yourselves to look at your arguments as a couple in a more constructive way then chances are you are bound to repeat the same mistakes again and again, until you all get tired and frustrated with the same resurfacing of the problem.

Mynd_44: I dont get why some women will stay with an abusive woman. Its something I am desperately trying to understand

Mynd... It is difficult to convince some women to leave their abusers. I also have seen men that were abused by their women as well. It is more common then we know but it is happening in silence.

She doesn't have any family members in our area that she can go to for a while. But I have offered to pay for a hotel since she is not allowed to stay at our home. My husband wants no parts of it.

Nope I've never been in any.

Emm...not really.

From my thoughts and views...I feel domestic violence and abuse are used for one purpose and one purpose only...to gain and maintain total control over you.

If your husband asks you to refrain yourself from that subject, then obey him and avoid bringing it up so peace can reign in your home.

He's right you know...what happens in their home is actually none of your business.

Note the bolded...some men just prefer to stay away from other people's territories. They hate engaging themselves in battles that have nothing to do with them or their loved ones. I won't blame him for that.

If you feel much concern for her, then you can report the matter to the authorities (police, court etc)

I thought you said you advised her to leave the house for a while?

Don't tell me she's still in that house.

I couldn't actually comprehend your statement here...but from the look of things, it seems you're her hero. I'm sure she would forever be grateful to you.

The part where you didn't understand my statement...I said that I have helped women leave their abusive partners but for some reason I can't convince her to leave her partner. She is left her hometown to be with him so she doesn't have family members she can call in the area.

Hope you understand now.

Wow. My husband also said in NIgeria...people do not get involve in couple's disputes. But at what point is enough is enough when a woman is walking around with black eyes and swollen lips?

Why doesn't he just leave her and set her free?

Wao that's a hell of a sacrifice she made (living in a town with no single family member)

Let me ask...since you desperately want to help this lady, have you thought about meeting her husband before? (I would advise you to go alone if at all you want to engage him in a conversation) What kind of person is he? Does he drink? Is he on drugs?

If you want to help this poor lady, there are many ways you can do it.

Haba, I contributed, before I got errm *coughs* distracted. I mentioned advising her to go on a trial separation, probably with an ultimatum for the guy to change his ways else it becomes permanent.?
I guess you could also take pictures of her and post to family members instead of that Rihanna pic. Alternatively, get them to lure her home for a visit, then prevent her from going back until the partner comes around.

I have stopped wondering what goes on in some female minds since I was told by one she likes it when her bf beats her a little, call it a fetish or whatever.

At the end of the day, it's her decision to stay or go. Even though you care, you can't make it for her, only point her in the right direction.

I have met her husband and he works in construction. You are not allow to drink nor smoke drugs on construction contracts in my area. If you dropped dirty..you are fired.

I see...so his abrasive nature is inbuilt. He isn't being controlled by any drugs or drinks.

I guess the woman is at fault then. She can't claim not to have noticed his true nature until now...I guess she was a victim of the phrase " love is blind "

I still feel for her though...but its obvious that either the man doesn't love her any more or he's gradually going insane.

Yea I remembered you stating earlier that your husband is against your hospitality towards that lady. Like I stated before, I won't blame him...the matter really isn't any of your business.

Moreover, if you know that getting so involved in this case might cost you your marriage, I would suggest that you harken unto the voice of thine husband and stay the hell out.

A's cut?Rangers' lead in AL?West to 4

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:22 a.m. ET Sept. 26, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - All it took was one big swing from George Kottaras to give the Oakland Athletics a much-needed victory against the team they're chasing in the AL West.

Kottaras hit a leadoff homer in the 10th inning and the A's moved within four games of the division lead by beating the first-place Texas Rangers 3-2 Tuesday night.

"To do that and help the team in that manner was huge for me," Kottaras said. "I went up there looking for a fastball and he threw one that I could handle."

Before that, Oakland hitters were having a miserable time against the Texas bullpen. The A's managed only one hit and struck out nine times in five innings against Michael Kirkman, Koji Uehara and Alexi Ogando.

Instead of bringing in closer Joe Nathan or setup man Mike Adams, the Rangers went with Mark Lowe in the 10th.

Kottaras hit a 3-2 fastball from Lowe (0-2) into the first row of the upper deck in right field. The catcher has six home runs for the A's since he was acquired July 29 from Milwaukee.

The A's remained two games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels for the second AL wild-card spot. The Angels beat Seattle 5-4.

"Each and every win has a little bit more magnitude to it, especially against a team that's above you," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "This team's responded like this many, many times this year. It doesn't surprise me."

Lowe hadn't pitched in a week and has given up six runs in his last 1 1-3 innings. Nathan and Adams had pitched the past two days.

"Some of those other guys in the bullpen have to come in and get outs," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "It can't always be Joe Nathan or Mike Adams."

Texas' magic number remained at five for clinching its third straight division crown.

Scheduled starter Yu Darvish was scratched by the Rangers about 2 1/2 hours before the first pitch because of a stiff neck. Scott Feldman took his place.

Feldman was removed after allowing a leadoff single to Kottaras in the fifth. The right-hander gave up two runs and four hits in four-plus innings before being relieved by Kirkman.

"I wanted to go as long as I could," said Feldman, who threw 75 pitches. "I would have loved to have thrown 100 pitches."

The A's lost the opener of the four-game series 5-4 Monday night. The teams play five more times over the final eight games of the season.

Evan Scribner (1-0) earned his first career victory with a perfect 10th, and Grant Balfour got three outs for his 21st save in 23 chances.

Oakland has played five consecutive one-run games, winning two. The A's are 3-5 on a 10-game road trip against Detroit, the New York Yankees and the Rangers.

"It's an exciting feeling to be in this position," Kottaras said. "All we can do is control how we play. We've had a bunch of tough losses, but we keep pushing."

Chris Carter hit a solo homer for the A's with two outs in the fourth to tie the score at 2. He came into the game in a 6-for-45 funk with 27 strikeouts over his last 14 games.

Oakland starter Tommy Milone gave up three straight singles to start the game before retiring 15 of his next 16 batters. The young lefty yielded two unearned runs and six hits over six innings.

"Any win is big for us and kind of gives us momentum going into the last two games of the series," Milone said.

Ian Kinsler and Elvis Andrus opened the first with consecutive singles. Josh Hamilton lined a single to right that went under Brandon Moss' glove, allowing Kinsler and Andrus to score on the error.

Moss, who played his 21st game in the outfield this season, started in right for a slumping Josh Reddick - mired in an 0-for-28 slump.

Reddick came in as a pinch-hitter and lined out to end the eighth.

Moss made up for his misplay with a running catch of Andrus' deep fly on the warning track with the bases loaded to end the seventh.

Daric Barton, making his second start since being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Sept. 10, had an RBI double in the second to cut Oakland's deficit to 2-1.

NOTES: Oakland CF Coco Crisp came in as a pinch-runner in the eighth and stole second. He was not in the starting lineup for the seventh game in a row because of an eye infection. ... Andrus came into the game in a 4-for-32 slump. ... The A's struck out 15 times and have 1,322 for the season, two short of the AL record set in 2007 by Tampa Bay. ... Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach was in a front-row seat near the Texas dugout.

Finding may help scientists develop a test that predicts complications resulting from radiotherapy

In the first study of its kind, a research team led by Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University discovered 12 genetic markers associated with the development of erectile dysfunction (ED) in prostate cancer patients who were treated with radiation. The findings, to be published online September 27, 2012, in advance of the October 1, 2012 print issue in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, the official scientific journal of the American Society for Radiation Oncology, are an important step towards helping clinicians determine the best course of treatment for prostate cancer patients and may lead to the development of therapies that alleviate side effects.

The main treatments for prostate cancer surgery, brachytherapy (seed implants) and external beam radiation therapy are all very effective at curing prostate cancer. Unfortunately, each treatment places patients at risk for ED. According to the National Cancer Institute, the prevalence of erectile dysfunction following external beam radiation for prostate cancer ranges from 65 percent to 85 percent. The Prostate Cancer Foundation estimates prevalence of ED following seed therapy at 25 to 50 percent. Many men will be able to regain their potency with time and treatments, but doctors would like to identify which men may be more likely to develop this side effect.

In the first large scale Genome-Wide Association Study to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with susceptibility for the development of erectile dysfunction following radiotherapy for prostate cancer, researchers conducted a two-part study, first, to discover the candidate genetic markers of side effect risk, and second, to confirm which of those markers are replicated in a second group of patients. In the first group of prostate cancer patients, which included 132 men who developed erectile dysfunction after radiotherapy and 103 men similarly treated who did not develop erectile dysfunction, they found a set of genetic markers associated with erectile dysfunction. In the second part of the study, which examined 128 patients who developed erectile dysfunction after radiotherapy and 102 who did not, researchers confirmed that 12 SNPs were associated with erectile dysfunction.

"Thankfully, current treatments for prostate cancer offer excellent rates of long-term survival, so patients and their physicians have a choice about which treatment path to take," said Barry Rosenstein, PhD, Professor of Radiation Oncology, Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "However, the risk of developing erectile dysfunction after radiation treatment is highly variable, suggesting there may be a genetic component to determining that risk. Our study confirms that specific markers make certain patients more susceptible to this side effect."

Patients in the study cohort were given one of three treatments: internal radiotherapy, known as brachytherapy; brachytherapy plus external beam radiation; or external beam radiation alone. They were followed for an average length of nearly four years to determine level of sexual function after treatment.

Interestingly, the 12 SNPs identified in this study were located near genes that seem to be related to erectile function rather than related to radiation response. The researchers conclude that these SNPs may affect genes that sensitize a patient to developing erectile dysfunction when exposed to radiation during therapy.

"Prostate cancer screening and treatment are undergoing major shifts," said Harry Ostrer, MD, Professor of Pathology and Genetics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Director of Genetic and Genomic Testing at Montefiore Medical Center and co-principal investigator of the study. "This is part of our ongoing effort to identify men at highest risk for disease, identify the aggressive tumors that would be responsive to therapy, and to improve quality of life for men with indolent prostate cancers who might benefit from active surveillance, rather than therapy."

The authors indicate that examination of a large, independent cohort of similarly treated patients will be necessary to definitively determine which SNPs to include as part of a clinically useful predictive test to identify which men are at greatest risk for developing erectile dysfunction following prostate cancer radiotherapy. The researchers are also evaluating the impact of radiation treatment on urinary complications and proctitis, the inflammation of the rectum.
