5 Totally Odd Tech Predictions - Business Insider

It's the time of year when everyone in the tech industry becomes a soothsayer.

Our email is full of predictions for the coming year. Most of them are obvious things that don't require a crystal ball. ("Tablets will be huge in 2013!")

But we found some really interesting ideas buried within this avalanche of humdrum thoughts.

Maybe by sharing them with you they will become self-fulfilling prophecies.

1. Bad guys start offering "hacking as a service"

Security company McAfee says that criminal hackers have begun to create invitation-only forums requiring registration fees. Next up, these forums could become some sort of black-market software-as-a-service. Pay a monthly fee and your malware is automatically updated to the latest attack. Don't pay, and it would be a shame if something happened to your beautiful website ...

2. Bad guys try to kidnap your smartphone

Hackers have become fond of a form of malware called "ransomware." It's a popular way to harass people who view Internet porn. While visiting a porn site, bad guys plant malware on a computer that threatens to report the computer user to the police unless they pay up.

In 2013, the trend will be to hold your phone hostage. Hackers will sneak malware onto smartphones and then make you pay if you don't want all the data on your phone destroyed or leaked. So thinks Chiranjeev Bordoloi, the CEO of security vendor Top Patch.

3. Fake meat becomes a real thing

Vegetarians have been producing foods that mimic the texture and taste of meat for eons. But that's really all about manipulating vegetable protein to make it look a little like meat and taste nothing like it.

The race is on to produce fake meat in much more technically advanced ways. Dutch researchers have found a way to "grow hamburger" in the laboratory from just a few bovine stem cells.

Meanwhile, tech investors have funded companies that will create food from plants that, they say, is nearly indistinguishable from real meat in taste, texture, and cookability. Stealthy startup Sand Hill Foods is one such company on investors' watch list.? Beyond Meat, a startup funded by Twitter cofounders Ev Williams and Biz Stone, makes realistic fake chicken and? will ramp up availability in 2013, too.

4. Your smartphone will be like a personal nurse

IBM has promised that one day soon doctors will use tech that will scan your body. They will send that data to the cloud for a diagnosis.?

That's just part of the healthcare revolution landing on your smartphone. Companies are developing smartphones with biosensors that do everything from check your blood sugar to detect the flu. Apple has been?promoting the iPhone as a platform for health technology since 2009, but some new devices are just coming to fruition.

5. The technology you use for work will be as much fun as the stuff you use at home

Most of us are so used to tech at work being a source of frustration that we can't imagine a different world. But that's changing.

In 2013, we'll all start to see new work tech that will make us feel like we're characters in an episode of "NCIS: Los Angeles." Tablets will lead software to be redesigned for touch interfaces?which will make it?fun and easy to use, more like a game than a spreadsheet. Best of all, more companies are adopting tech that lets you download a "virtual work desktop" on any device, simply by logging in on a Web browser or launching a mobile app.

Reid says 2 sides still apart on 'fiscal cliff'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says the two sides are still apart as they race against a midnight deadline for resolving their differences over the "fiscal cliff."

The Nevada Democrat says negotiations are continuing. But he cautioned that bargainers are running out of time and still have differences over some issues, though he did not say what still divides them.

Reid's remarks came Monday morning after the two sides narrowed their differences during an evening of bargaining between Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Vice President Joe Biden.

Without agreement by midnight, wide-ranging tax increases and budget-wide spending cuts ? the so-called fiscal cliff ? will begin taking effect. Though the impact of those changes would be felt gradually, economists have warned that they could cause recession if left intact.

Japan casino tycoon bets big on Philippines fixer

TOKYO, Dec 31 ? Japanese billionaire Kazuo Okada was facing a crisis: work on his dream casino by the bay in Manila was going nowhere.

Instead of a world-class resort packed with Chinese high-rollers, Okada, 70, was sitting on a US$300-million (RM900 million) patchwork of reclaimed and undeveloped land next to the Manila airport that by the middle of 2009 was threatening to become a money pit, according to company records and people involved.

Crucial regulatory approvals were tied up in red tape. The provisional gaming license was flawed. No one could tell the architect how high he could build the gold-toned towers without endangering incoming aircraft.

To realize Okada?s goal of making the Manila casino more profitable than rival operations in Macau or Las Vegas, the project needed to win an exemption from corporate taxes in the Philippines. It also needed a presidential order giving Okada?s company, Universal Entertainment, the ability to own the resort outright as a foreign investor.

Universal executives believed Philippine officials had promised those concessions by the end of 2008 for a project expected to create more than 6,000 jobs. The Philippine gaming authority had given Okada a side letter to Universal?s provisional license in August 2008 saying it would make its ?best effort? to get those approvals from then-Philippines President Gloria Arroyo.

It would mean hundreds of millions of dollars in additional profit each year if the approvals came through, according to an analysis of Universal?s presentations to regulators and investors.

By June 2009, however, the project was more than six months behind schedule and Okada?s patience was wearing thin. When Arroyo came to visit Tokyo, Okada saw her in a meeting arranged by the head of Philippine gaming regulator, Efraim Genuino.

?Get clarity on how long it will take to solve these problems on the spot and extract a promise,? a note prepared for Okada in Japanese by Universal executives said. It was not clear what was discussed in the private meeting.

Reuters examined hundreds of pages of documents from Universal and Philippine regulators and interviewed nearly two dozen people involved in the project in Japan and the Philippines in reconstructing how Universal tried to push through its casino deal in the Philippines in the final months of the Arroyo administration. That deal is now the subject of investigations there and in the United States.

The record shows Universal won concessions on three critical issues that had threatened the US$2-billion project in late 2009 and early 2010.

First, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), the gaming regulator under Genuino, brokered a land swap in November 2009 that Universal needed to move ahead with construction.

Then in February 2010, Arroyo signed a presidential order making it possible for foreign investors such as Okada to have 100-per cent ownership of casinos. Around the same time, Arroyo?s office approved an application for corporate tax relief from Universal?s land-holding company. Both measures were expected but the delays had frustrated Universal executives, records show.

Universal pushed hard to get its final gaming license from Genuino ? right up until June 29, 2010, a day before he left his post ? but failed to get it.

As it raced to win final approval for its casino, Universal also funnelled a total of US$40 million in payments to Rodolfo Soriano, an aide to Genuino and a former consultant to PAGCOR who had become central to Universal?s operations in the Philippines by late 2009.

Of the total US$40 million in transfers to Soriano, US$10 million was immediately returned to the Japanese company in May 2010 to avoid writing off a bad loan extended to another company not involved in the casino project, as Universal closed the books on its fiscal year, records show.

The payments to Soriano, now under investigation as potential bribery, were first reported by Reuters.

It is unclear what happened with the US$30 million paid to Soriano that remained with him. Soriano, who came to be known to Universal executives by his nickname ?Boysie?, has not commented on the payments and could not be reached. There is no evidence the money was transferred to officials in the Arroyo administration or to others.

Universal booked US$7 million of the payments to Soriano as a ?consulting fee?, citing his help in winning the order signed by Arroyo allowing foreign casino ownership as partial justification for the payment, according to company documents seen by Reuters. Okada broke ground on construction of the casino in January 2012, but PAGCOR under its new chairman has threatened to strip Universal of its license if evidence of bribery is found.

Universal said it conducted its business in the Philippines lawfully. Its lawyer, Yuki Arai, declined to comment further.

Genuino has been charged with misuse of public funds during his time at PAGCOR for allegations unrelated to the Universal payments to Soriano. He could not be reached for comment.

Arroyo has been under hospital arrest for charges related to alleged electoral fraud and misuse of public funds during her presidency. Her spokeswoman, Elena Bautista-Horn, did not return calls seeking comment.

Universal has sued three former employees claiming that US$15 million transferred to Soriano ? including the US$10 million that was immediately returned ? was unauthorised.

In early December, Okada and Universal announced they had filed a libel action against Reuters in Tokyo for reporting on the payments to Soriano in November.

Okada, one of Japan?s most successful entrepreneurs, had risen through hardship and trusted his gut when it came to the biggest decisions.

His father died when he was in elementary school, a loss he said helped make him self-reliant. He made his first fortune fixing and selling American jukeboxes in the 1960s. He became a billionaire selling pachinko machines, a Japanese form of legal gambling.

By the late 1990s, the pachinko market had peaked and Universal began to look for ways to diversify.

Okada met casino impresario Steve Wynn in 2000. The two had to rely on a translator ? Okada speaks little English ? but both said they began a strong friendship. On a handshake, Okada became Wynn?s major investor.

?I got lucky,? Wynn, 70, told Nevada gaming regulators in 2004. ?At first I could hardly believe it, but then US$250 million came ?zwinging? in.? Wynn also said then he believed Okada to be a man of deep integrity. ?Take the high road. Do the right thing,? he recalled Okada telling him.

Okada staked Wynn for a total of US$380 million. That jump-started construction of the Wynn Las Vegas resort that opened on the site of the old Desert Inn in 2005, and the even more profitable Wynn Macau in 2006. By 2010, Okada?s investment had increased in value almost eight times and returned just over US$600 million in dividends.

Macau in particular has produced stunning results. By 2011, the Macau market was bringing in almost US$34 billion a year, making it more than five times larger than Las Vegas.

When Genuino visited Tokyo in 2007 to drum up interest in a US$15-billion resort and casino complex PAGCOR wanted to develop, Okada jumped at the chance to invest, people involved said.

A year later, on the cusp of global recession, Universal paid just over US$300 million for 30 hectares (74 acres) on Manila Bay. In August 2008, PAGCOR granted a provisional license to its casino operating company, Tiger Resorts, Leisure and Entertainment.

But Okada later realized the initial license fell short of what the company had sought, records show. Universal did not want to have to hire employees, including dealers, through PAGCOR and pay fees to the regulator as a placement service, according to letters sent from Universal to PAGCOR.

Universal also pressed PAGCOR to allow high-rollers coming on trips organised by junket operators to come into the casino without reporting their names to the regulator. Junket operators combine concierge and credit services for rich Chinese and have been central to the growth of gambling in Macau.

To promote Manila as an alternative to Macau, Universal wanted to make it a market where the winnings of Chinese gamblers would be ?free of supervision,? according to a company presentation.

There was also some uncertainty about whether Wynn would join the Okada project. Okada said he wanted to bring Wynn in as a partner through late 2010. ?At that time I trusted him. I showed him everything,? Okada told Reuters in October.

Wynn, however, was always sceptical about doing business in the Philippines, a person familiar with his thinking said. When Okada asked him to visit Manila in June 2010, he agreed to a briefing from Genuino. But he turned up in a polo shirt when everyone else wore business attire, a sign he saw himself as a spectator, the person said.

By early 2012, Wynn and Okada had split and begun a legal fight over Okada?s continued investment in Wynn?s company that is playing out in courthouses in the United States, Japan and the Philippines.

A Wynn investigation found Universal had paid US$110,000 to entertain gaming regulators from Korea and the Philippines. The Wynn camp alleges that showed Okada was an unfit partner. Okada has said Universal entertains officials in line with its internal policy and denies any wrongdoing. The guest list that drew the attention of Wynn included Soriano, Genuino and Mike Arroyo, the husband of then-President Gloria Arroyo.

Wynn told Okada and other directors in 2011 that he did not think it would be possible to operate in the Philippines, consistently ranked as one of the most corrupt economies in Asia, according to a legal claim filed by Universal in Nevada.

?All of us are of one mind,? Wynn told Reuters. ?We cannot be related to activities in the Philippines.?

When Okada and the Universal board approved the Manila project in August 2008, they projected it would be a cornerstone of a string of resorts around the rapidly growing Asian market. They expected Universal would become a US$9 billion company by 2014 with a listing on the Hong Kong stock exchange, according to notes from the board meeting.

Casino gambling revenues in the Asia-Pacific region have more than tripled since 2007, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers. The region is set to overtake the US market as largest in the world next year when gambling revenues reach US$67 billion from US$58 billion in 2012.

Universal?s first designs were based on the Wynn casinos, featuring two wings in reflective gold glass. Plans included US$150 million to build one of Asia?s largest aquariums and a ?Kidzania? playland, with another US$70 million for the ?Manila Eye,? a massive Ferris Wheel.

But Okada?s plans for a ?six-star? resort were immediately tested by a litany of problems on the ground in Manila. Engineers discovered 10 hectares (24 acres) of its site was reserved for road use and held by another developer, making building impossible. It had been overlooked in the original purchase. ?We didn?t realize at the time that we had the road problem,? a memo from June 2009 said. ?Our land was crisscrossed by these roads like wormholes.?

Universal?s Manila staff worried there was no easy fix. After months of delays, Universal called in Genuino to negotiate a land swap between Universal, the local city of Paranaque and developer Asiaworld Properties Philippine Corporation.

?The right answer is to ask PAGCOR Chairman (Genuino) to be our public face in this matter,? the memo said.

Over the summer, Universal pushed for more frequent contact with Genuino. It set up a video conferencing facility so the two sides could talk more regularly. Universal also sought to make Genuino the conduit for passing on key documents to Arroyo?s presidential office, company documents show.

Around that time, Universal was also looking to break with Philippine law firm SyCip Salazar Hernandez and Gatmaitan, which it felt was charging too much and moving too slowly, according to company memos. As it prepared to ditch SyCip, Universal rebuilt its strategy around Soriano in what was described in an internal memo as a ?shift to Boysie?.

In a statement, SyCip partner Imelda Manguiat, who handled the Universal account, said all transactions the law firm worked on were legitimate and lawful. She declined to comment further.

Shifting to Soriano meant reworking a structure that allowed it to circumvent the requirement that the landholding company behind the casino be at least 60 per cent owned by Filipinos.

Records reviewed by Reuters show Universal had bankrolled the original investment meant to satisfy that foreign ownership requirement. This was done by depositing US$4.4 million in a Banco De Oro account in 2008. That money secured a loan to a firm called Lex Development Corp, a shell company established by SyCip. Lex used the money to make its investment in the project. Universal covered interest on the loan, records show.

The holding was transferred in 2009 to Platinum Gaming and Entertainment, a Soriano-affiliated firm, records show.

Okada remained in charge of key decisions involving Universal and the Manila project, current and former employees said. On some mornings, employees would wait more than an hour to speak to him. Any expense over US$36,000 had to be approved by the strategy board for the Manila project, records show.

Sometimes Okada?s hands-on style grated on his people. In one December 2009 meeting, Okada and Toshihiko Nishigaki, a hotel industry veteran brought in to oversee the Manila project, got into a heated discussion about responsibility for the project, according to three people in the room. Nishigaki asked Okada to step into the corridor and a shouting match ensued.

Within weeks, Nishigaki was gone. His departure was the start of a transition that put greater focus on a quicker return from a downsized project. Plans for the Ferris Wheel and other attractions that had promised to turn the casino into a tourist magnet were dropped or scaled back, people involved said.

Nishigaki did not respond to a letter seeking comment.

In November 2009, Okada hosted a PAGCOR delegation, including Soriano, in Las Vegas to watch Philippine national hero Manny Pacquiao retain his title in a welterweight championship fight. Universal picked up the tab for Soriano and the PAGCOR delegation at Wynn Las Vegas at a cost of US$14,412, records show.

Then in January 2010, Okada led a delegation of Universal executives from Tokyo to the wedding of Genuino?s son, Anthony, at the Sofitel hotel in Manila. Okada sat at the same table as former Philippines First Lady Imelda Marcos. Executives who accompanied Okada said the intent was to show his support for Genuino and his politically ambitious family.

PAGCOR filed corruption complaints against Efraim Genuino and other former PAGCOR officials in 2011 alleging they diverted funds to help favoured candidates for public office, including Genuino?s children.

In part, Genuino is accused of diverting rice Okada had donated to help typhoon victims in 2008 to support the candidacy of his sons, two years later. The rice was delivered to potential voters in bags with pictures of Anthony and Erwin, according to the charges.

Anthony was elected mayor of the city of Los Banos, while Erwin ran unsuccessfully in the May 2010 elections.

The Department of Justice recently said it would not pursue charges against Anthony and Erwin due to a lack of evidence. Neither of the sons could be reached for comment.

The US$40 million in payments from Universal began moving to Soriano on January 14, 2010 with an initial instalment of US$10 million transferred to the bank account of Subic Leisure and Management, a Soriano-controlled company registered in the British Virgin Islands. Another US$15 million was transferred to Subic Leisure on March 3, 2010, internal records show.

Then in late April and early May 2010 Universal recycled another US$10 million payment through the same Subic Leisure route. Records show Universal brought the money back to its own accounts in a move aimed at covering a loan to a company called AZ Games International Corp that had gone sour, according to company records and people involved in the transaction. AZ Games was registered in the British Virgin Islands and operated with little oversight as a result. It had been dissolved months before, records show.

The final US$5 million was paid to a Hong Kong shell company named People?s Technology Holding Ltd, of which Soriano was the sole shareholder. It was paid four days after Soriano met Okada and other Universal executives at a Chinese restaurant in central Tokyo to press for the transfer, people with knowledge of the meeting said.

Universal has filed two lawsuits against three former employees claiming the final US$5 million and the US$10 million that came back to Universal were not authorized. In rebuttals to the Universal lawsuits, two former executives ? Mitsuo Hida and Takafumi Nakano ? said they had been following orders in making the payments. Nakano said he was considering becoming a whistleblower under Japan?s anti-bribery law.

At the end of June 2010, Genuino stepped down after a controversy erupted over his ?midnight? reappointment by Arroyo. The election of President Benigno Aquino the month before posed potential complications for Universal.

Okada went to Manila to meet the new PAGCOR chief, Christino Naguiat, in August 2010. A month later, he hosted Naguiat at the Wynn Macau casino and covered US$50,523 of expenses during a four-day stay. Universal does not contest it covered hotel rooms and other costs for government officials but maintains no laws were broken. Naguiat has said there was nothing inappropriate about his stay.

A memo from Okada?s August 2010 visit to Manila notes he was ?trying to keep a good relationship with and feel comfortable with the new government.? But it also contained harsh words for his Manila-based staff.

?I think you should have made a prediction what would happen due to change of government and should have made necessary preparations,? Okada was quoted as saying.

Okada?s ambition to build casinos around Asia hinges in part on how the investigation of the Manila payments is resolved. The payments to Soriano are the subject of a Philippine Department of Justice investigation and two separate congressional hearings in the Philippines.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board said last month its investigation was progressing. Possible sanctions include a suspension of Universal?s gaming license.

Earlier this month, Universal signed a deal giving Philippine property firm Robinsons Land Corp a minority stake in its casino operating company and a majority stake in its Manila landholding company.

The Manila project ? now known as Manila Bay Resorts after initially being dubbed ?Okada Resort Manila Bay? ? is scheduled to open in 2014, four years behind initial projections. ? Reuters

(AP) ? Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who made a fortune as a health care executive, long opposed President Barack Obama's remake of the health insurance market. After the Democratic president won re-election, the Republican governor softened his tone. He said he wanted to "have a conversation" with the administration about implementing the 2010 law. With a federal deadline approaching, he also said while Florida won't set up the exchange for individuals to buy private insurance policies, the feds can do it.

In New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie held his cards before saying he won't set up his own exchange, but he's avoided absolute language and says he could change his mind. He's also leaving his options open to accept federal money to expand Medicaid insurance for people who aren't covered. The caveat, Christie says, is whether Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius can "answer my questions" about its operations and expense.

Both Republican governors face re-election in states that Obama won twice, Christie in 2013 and Scott in 2014. And both will encounter well-financed Democrats.

Their apparent struggles on the issue, along with other postures by their GOP colleagues elsewhere, suggest political uncertainty for Republicans as the Affordable Care Act starts to go into effect two years after clearing Congress without a single Republican vote. The risks also are acute for governors in Democratic-leaning or swing-voting states or who know their records will be parsed should they seek the presidency in 2016 or beyond.

"It's a tough call for many Republican governors who want to do the best thing for their state but don't want to be seen as advancing an overhaul that many Republicans continue to detest," said Whit Ayers, a consultant in Virginia whose clients include Gov. Bill Haslam of Tennessee, a Republican who didn't announce his rejection of a state exchange until days before Sebelius's Dec. 14 deadline.

Indeed, cracks keep growing in the near-unanimous Republican rejection of Obama's health care law that characterized the GOP's political messaging for the last two years. Five GOP-led states ? Idaho, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah ? are pressing ahead with state insurance exchanges. Ongoing monitoring by The Associated Press shows that another five Republican-led states are pursuing or seriously a partnership with Washington to help run the new markets.

Democrats, meanwhile, hope to use the law and Republican inflexibility to their advantage, betting that more Americans will embrace the law once it expands coverage. The calculus for voters, Democrats assume, will become more about the policy and less about a polarizing president.

"It shouldn't be complicated at all," said John Anzalone, an Obama pollster who assists Democrats in federal races across the country. Anzalone said Republicans could use their own states-rights argument to justify running exchanges. Instead, he said, "They are blinded by Obama-hatred rather than seeing what's good for their citizens."

Governors can set up their own exchanges, partner with Sebelius' agency or let the federal government do it. The exchanges are set to open Jan. 1, 2014, allowing individuals and businesses to shop online for individual policies from private insurers. Low- and middle-income individuals will get federal premium subsidies calculated on a sliding income scale. Eighteen states plus Washington, DC, most led by Democrats, have committed to opening their own exchanges.

The law also calls for raising the income threshold for Medicaid eligibility to cover people making up to 138 percent of the federal poverty line, or about $15,400 a year for an individual. That could add more than 10 million people, most of them childless adults, to the joint state-federal insurance program for low-income and disabled Americans. Together, the exchanges and the Medicaid expansion are expected to reduce the number of uninsured by about 30 million people within the next decade.

A Supreme Court ruling last summer made the Medicaid expansion voluntary, rather than mandatory for states. At least eight governors, all of them Republicans, have already said they have no plans to expand Medicaid.

The complexity is obvious.

National exit polls from last month's election showed that 49 percent of voters wanted some or all of Obama's signature legislative achievement rolled back. Among self-identified independents, that number was 58 percent. Among Republicans, it spiked to 81 percent. When asked about the role of government, half of respondents said the notion that government is doing too much fits their views more closely than the idea that government should do more.

Before the election, a national AP-GfK poll suggested that 63 percent of respondents preferred their states to run insurance exchanges, almost double the 32 percent who wanted the federal government to take that role. And the same electorate that tilts toward repealing some or all of the new law clearly re-elected its champion.

That's not the most important consideration for governors who face re-election in Republican states. Georgia's Nathan Deal and Alabama's Robert Bentley, who also face 2014 campaigns, initially set up advisory commissions to consider how to carry out the health care law, but they've since jumped ship. But, unlike others, Deal and Bentley aren't eyeing national office.

Three Republicans who are viewed as potential national candidates ? Rick Perry of Texas, Nikki Haley of South Carolina and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana ? were full-throated opponents. Jindal, the only one of the three who is term-limited, is the incoming chairman of the Republican Governors Association. In that role, he has co-signed more conciliatory letters to Sebelius asking questions to flesh out how the designs might work.

Republican governors also are feeling quiet pressure from hospitals and other providers.

Deal, the Georgia governor, offers the typical argument for saying no: "We can't afford it." But the law envisions the new Medicaid coverage more or less as a replacement of an existing financing situation that pays hospitals to treat the uninsured. The law contemplates cuts in that program, which already requires state seed money. The idea was that expanding Medicaid coverage would reduce "uncompensated care" costs.

"Some of those cuts were made with the expectation that Medicaid would be expanded and that hospitals would be paid for portions of business that we are not being paid for now," said Don Dalton of the North Carolina Hospital Association.

Dalton's Governor-elect, Republican Pat McCrory, said as a candidate that he opposed Medicaid expansion. Dalton said his industry is leaning on McCrory and legislative leaders, though he commended "their deliberate approach." Similar efforts are underway in South Carolina, Georgia, Missouri and elsewhere.

For Democrats, Anzalone said the framing will be simpler: "You don't want to take a 9-to-1 match? That's a pretty easy investment. These governors who aren't expanding Medicaid, they're basically giving taxpayer money to the states that do."

5 Simple Health Tests You Can Perform at Home - Build Muscle and ...

Home Health Tests

Home Health Girl

Not every cough and sniffle calls for a visit to the doctor?s office, nor does every scrape and burn necessitate an expensive trip to the emergency room. In most cases you can tell if a home remedy will do the trick or if professional medical care is advisable, but you will certainly have occasions where you?re just not sure if the symptoms will pass or if you need professional help.

Many people would probably appreciate having ways to determine their relative state of health between annual physicals or check-ups in order to see if they need additional care or alternately, if their efforts to improve health and fitness are paying off. So here are just a few simple health tests that you can perform on your own at home to check yourself out.

  1. Temperature

Fevers are indicative of an infection, or rather, they are the result of your body fighting an infection. In most cases there is no cause for concern. Although a fever will make you feel pretty awful, the majority are low-grade and break within a matter of hours or just a couple of days.

However, there may be extreme scenarios in which you require hospitalization with a fever, such as an unusually high temperature (103 degrees Fahrenheit or greater), an extended fever (lasting longer than a week), or accompanying symptoms like excessive vomiting (leading to dangerous dehydration), chest or abdominal pain, confusion or hallucinations, or any other symptoms that seem serious. Taking your temperature with an inexpensive home thermometer can give you a quick gauge of the severity of a fever.

  2. Pulse

Studies show that your resting heart rate can offer you an early warning of your risk for heart attack. The average adult heart should beat about 60 times per minute. This rate indicates optimum health and extremely low risk for heart attack. But once your pulse gets over about 75 beats per minute your risk for heart attack rises significantly.

Luckily, testing your resting heart rate is easy. All you have to do is sit and relax for a few minutes and then take your pulse (at your wrist or throat). If the number is high, it may be time to talk to your doctor.

  3. Blood pressure

High or low blood pressure can be to blame for a number of symptoms that range from annoying to potentially deadly. Those on the low end of the spectrum may experience fatigue, dizziness, and fainting, while high blood pressure can be to blame for headaches and even strokes. But if you purchase a blood pressure cuff and learn how to read it (you can find them on Amazon for about ten bucks and there are tons of tutorials online that will show you how to use one), you can track your own blood pressure to determine if it might be playing a role in your symptoms.

  4. BMI

Your body mass index is not exactly easy to calculate, but it?s certainly not rocket science. To start, measure your weight (in pounds) and height (in inches). Now divide you weight by your height squared. So if you are 60 inches tall (five feet) and you weigh a hundred pounds, for example, your equation would be 100/60?60, or 100/3600, resulting in an answer of 0.028. You will then multiply this number by 703 (called the conversion factor), which will result in your body mass index (in this case about 19.7).

So what does this number mean? In general, you want the number to fall in the 18.5 to 25 range as this is considered to be the healthiest weight for your height. If your calculation comes out below 18.5 or above 25, you could be at an unhealthy weight (although you may want to talk to your doctor for further information).

(Note from the editor: this post is essentially a guest post. Project Swole does not support BMI in the slightest. BMI is a joke and does not reflect a measure of healthiness in anyone who has more muscle mass than the average person. Instead, you want to use body fat percentage to determine how much fat you are holding on your body with respect to non-fat tissue. This can be calculated using either calipers or an electronic hand-held tool.

  5. Pregnancy

Granted, this type of home health test only applies to about half of the population, but as test kits at home go, this one is pretty popular. Although you will probably want to go to the doctor eventually if your test is positive, a negative result could save you an unnecessary trip.

GLHFCasting ? Different Car Insurance Policies

Every year, more drivers hit the highways. With countless vehicles on the road, accidents are going to happen. If you get in a car accident, the auto insurance you own can make a big difference in what happens next. But why do you need to own insurance and exactly how much should you purchase? Insurance requirements vary by state/province, but typically include the following: Liability: This kind of insurance will pay for the damage that you have caused. These damages may include bodily injury, and property damage. If you are sued, it also pays your legal fees. Local laws typically require standard amounts of liability insurance, but larger amounts are available and extremely helpful. Personal Injury Protection: This type of insurance pays for the medical treatment for you or your passengers, no matter who was at fault in the collision. It is commonly referred to as no-fault coverage. Local government typically sets minimum amounts. Medical Payments: This coverage can be purchased in states that are not considered no-fault; it pays regardless of who may have been at fault. If this type of coverage is bought, the insured person will receive coverage for reasonable medical or funeral expenses. Collision: Damages that occur from a car accident will be covered under this kind of insurance. Comprehensive: Protect your car from all non-collision damages when you buy this type of insurance. This includes protection from burglary, vandalism, and weather damage. Uninsured Motorist: Pays for repair and replacement costs when someone with insurance is in a crash caused by a driver who does not have liability coverage. Under-Insured Motorist: Similar to uninsured coverage, this kind of insurance protects you against people driving without sufficient insurance coverage. Emergency road service, car rental, and other types of coverage can also be purchased. What you pay for auto insurance varies based on the company and will depend on several factors, including: * What coverage you choose * The type of the car you drive * Your driving record * Your age, gender and marital status * Where you live Many people think of auto insurance as a necessary evil, but it can save you from a financial fiasco. Evaluate your needs, research your options, and with the help of your insurance agency, make the decision that best suits you. Home Insurance Wayne PA

India rape victim in Singapore; PM pledges action

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledged Thursday to take action to protect the nation's women while the young victim of a gang rape on a New Delhi bus was flown to Singapore for treatment of severe internal injuries.

The Dec. 16 rape and brutal beating of the 23-year-old student triggered widespread protests, including a march on Thursday, demanding a government crackdown on the daily harassment Indian women face, ranging from groping to severe violence. Some protesters have called for the death penalty or castration for rapists, who under current laws face a maximum punishment of life in prison.

Rape victims rarely press charges because of social stigma and fear they will be accused of inviting the attack. Many women say they structure their lives around protecting themselves and their daughters from attack.

Singh's government set up two committees in response to the protests. One, looking into speeding up sexual assault trials, has already received 6,100 email suggestions. The second will examine what lapses might have contributed to the rape ? which took place on a moving bus that passed through police checkpoints ? and suggest measures to improve women's safety.

"Let me state categorically that the issue of safety and security of women is of the highest concern to our government," Singh said at a development meeting. He urged officials in India's states to pay special attention to the problem.

"There can be no meaningful development without the active participation of half the population, and this participation simply cannot take place if their security and safety is not assured," he said.

The rape victim arrived in Singapore on an air ambulance Thursday and was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Mount Elizabeth hospital, renowned for multi-organ transplant facilities.

On Thursday night she remained in "extremely critical condition" as a team of specialists worked to stabilize her, Dr. Kelvin Loh, the hospital's chief executive officer, said in a statement. Before arriving in Singapore, she had already undergone three abdominal surgeries and suffered cardiac arrest, he said.

India's Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said in a statement that the government, which is funding and overseeing the victim's treatment, had decided to send her abroad on the recommendation of her doctors.

"Despite the best efforts of our doctors, the victim continues to be critical and her fluctuating health remains a big cause of concern to all of us," he said.

Her family was also being sent to Singapore to be with her during her treatment, which could last weeks, he said.

Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters demanding safer public transportation for women and the resignation of Delhi's police commissioner tried to march to the major India Gate traffic circle in central Delhi before being stopped by police in riot gear manning barricades. Protesters carried signs reading, "Immediately end rape culture in India" and "Zero tolerance of violence against women."

Protests have shut down the center of the capital for days since the rape. Police quashed some of the demonstrations with tear gas, water cannons and baton charges.

One police officer died Tuesday after collapsing during a weekend protest. Police said an autopsy showed the officer had a heart attack that could have been caused by injuries suffered during violence at the protest. An Associated Press journalist at the scene said the officer was running toward the protesters with a group of police when he collapsed on the ground and began frothing at the mouth and shaking. Two protesters rushed to the officer to try to help him. Police charged eight people with murder in the death of the policeman.

Police said the rape victim was traveling on the evening of Dec. 16 with a male friend on a bus when they were attacked by six men who gang-raped her and beat the couple with iron rods before stripping them and dumping them on a road. All six suspects in the case have been arrested, police said.

Also Thursday, Ratanjit Singh, a junior minister in the home ministry, said the government would create a database of convicted rapists and publish it, along with their photos, on the ministry website to shame them, according to the Press Trust of India.

Helping Mom And Dad Sell Antiques, Collectibles, Art When There ...

Helping Older Adults Downsize When There Are Early Signs of Dementia?

A fews years ago, my dad was beginning to liquidate the contents of his home. He began by trying to sell his paintings which he had acquired in his more prosperous years. With a turn in the economy he was hoping to sell off some of his paintings to help pay the bills.

Saying Good Bye To Art And Collections

It was indeed a very sad state of affairs when dad had to part with the paintings he had collected for many years. At that time dad still had his memory and cognitive abilities. He knew how to evaluate who he was getting advice from and he was still actively engaged in the world at large.

Helping Parents Sell Antiques And Collections: Estate Liquidation

But what happens when a parent begins to develop early dementia and slowly begins to slip away from the world at large. ?Should they be selling anything on their own? This post is to open up the conversation about helping older adults particapate in downsizing before they are having symptoms of early dementia. And by all means, keep mom and dad always in the loop, gently helping them with the process.

Keeping An Eye On What Parfents Are Sellng And When

If you are the adult child of a parent who is an Octogenarian or even older you will probaly find yourself involved sooner or later in the care of that parent and the liquidation of ?heirlooms, collectibles and valuables. It is best to keep on eye on the situration as early as possible. If you suspect that a parent is starting ?to have trouble with memory, activities of ?daily living ?or managing their household and finances etc. they will certainly need help in dealing with Auction houses, galleries, Antique stores etc.

Intervening Early When A Parent Starts Showing Signs of Dementia

The time to step into the situtation is before the symptoms of dementia as described below are observed.?However if you find yourself already in the middle of Mom or dad's dementia, you may want to take a more active role in deciding what goes where and when.

You will also need to get legal authority, so be sure to consult an attorney to establish a Power of Attorney so you can advocate for a parent who needs your help.

1. Confusion about what bills to pay.
2. Paying the same bill several times.
3. Unopened mail.
4. Disorganized workspace.
5. Comfusion on how to use computer and send and receive emails.

Cliff Hanger: Washington Tries for Last-Minute Deal - Politics - CBN ...

With the edge of the fiscal cliff in sight there's still no deal in Washington.

The news comes as President Obama hosts a meeting Friday in a last ditch effort to break the stalemate with the Republican-dominated Congress.

"I have to be very honest. I don't know time-wise how it can happen now," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said.
???
If there is no deal by Jan. 1, every American will see their taxes go up and automatic spending cuts will be implemented.
????
Republicans continue to blame Democrats for the standoff, saying there are limits to compromise.

"Republicans aren't about to write a blank check on anything Senate Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff. That wouldn't be fair to the American people," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, said.
????
Democrats blasted Republicans, insisting that taxes increase only for the wealthy Americans and made it clear they're unwilling to compromise on spending cuts.

"The Republicans in the House have left town. The negotiations between the president and the speaker have fallen apart as they have for the last three-and-a-half years. We've tried mightily to get something done," Reid said.

"The American people have a right to be very upset with this Congress," Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., charged.

Neither side appears confident a deal will be reached.
????
Nevertheless, the president is scheduled to meet with the top four congressional leaders Friday, and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, called the House back into session for a rare Sunday session.

Meanwhile, the country is set to reach its debt ceiling limit come Monday.
???
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says he's working on a temporary fix. But economists worry this could plunge the United States back into a recession.

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's chief prosecutor ordered an investigation on Thursday into allegations that opposition leaders committed treason by inciting supporters to overthrow Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

The probe by a Morsi-appointed prosecutor was launched a day after the president called for a dialogue with the opposition to heal rifts opened in the bitter fight over an Islamist-drafted constitution just approved in a referendum. The opposition decried the investigation as a throwback to Hosni Mubarak's regime, when the law was used to smear and silence opponents.

The probe was almost certain to sour the already tense political atmosphere in the country.

The allegations were made initially in a complaint by at least two lawyers sent to the chief prosecutor earlier this month. They targeted opposition leaders Mohammed ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace laureate and former head of the U.N. nuclear agency, former Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, and Hamdeen Sabahi. Both Moussa and Sabahi were presidential candidates who competed against Morsi in the last election.

There was no immediate comment by any of the three opposition leaders named but the opposition dismissed the allegations.

Emad Abu Ghazi, secretary-general of the opposition party ElBaradei heads, said the investigation was "an indication of a tendency toward a police state and the attempt to eliminate political opponents." He said the ousted Mubarak regime dealt with the opposition in the same way.

Mubarak jailed his opponents, including liberals and Islamists. International rights groups said their trials did not meet basic standards of fairness.

ElBaradei was a leading figure behind the uprising against Mubarak and at one point, he was allied with the Brotherhood against the old regime.

The investigation does not necessarily mean charges will be filed against the leaders. But it is unusual for state prosecutors to investigate such broad charges against high-profile figures.

Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, asked the opposition on Wednesday to join a national dialogue to heal rifts and move on after a month of huge street protests against him and the constitution drafted by his allies.

Some of the protests erupted into deadly violence. On Dec. 5, anti-Morsi demonstrators staging a sit-in outside the presidential palace in Cairo were attacked by Morsi supporters. Fierce clashes ensued that left 10 people dead.

The wave of protests began after Morsi's Nov. 22 decrees that gave him and the assembly writing the constitution immunity from judicial oversight. That allowed his Islamist allies on the assembly to hurriedly rush through the charter before an expected court ruling dissolving the panel.

After the decrees, the opposition accused Morsi of amassing too much power in his hands. They said the constitution was drafted without the participation of liberal, minority Christian and women members of the assembly, who walked out in protest at the last minute.

Even though the constitution passed in a referendum, the opposition has vowed to keep fighting it. They say it enshrines Islamic law in Egypt, undermines rights of minorities and women, and restricts freedoms.

Morsi and Brotherhood officials accused the opposition of working to undermine the president's legitimacy, and accused former regime officials of working to topple him.

Although he reached out to the opposition for reconciliation, Morsi did not offer any concessions in his speech Wednesday calling for a dialogue.

On Wednesday Morsi asked his prime minister to carry out a limited reshuffle of his government, without offering the opposition any seats.

In an apparent protest against the decision to keep the same prime minister, the minister of parliamentary affairs resigned. A member of his Islamist party said Prime Minister Hesham Kandil has not lived up to the challenges of the previous period, and a stronger, more political prime minister should be nominated.

This is the second resignation of a Cabinet minister this week and follows a spate of resignations of senior aides and advisers during the constitutional crisis.

Details of the complaint filed by the two lawyers were carried on the website of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamic fundamentalist group that has become Egypt's most powerful political faction since the 2011 uprising.

The report said their complaint alleged that the opposition leaders were "duping simple Egyptians to rise against legitimacy and were inciting against the president," which constitutes treason.

Yara Khalaf, a spokeswoman for Moussa, said there were no official charges and he had not been summoned for investigation. But she declined to comment on the accusations.

Heba Yassin, a spokesman for the Popular Current headed by Sabahi, said Sabahi faced similar charges under Mubarak and his predecessor. She dismissed them as fabrications and an attempt to smear his reputation and silence the opposition.

"Morsi is confirming that he is following the same policies of Mubarak in repressing his opponents and trying to smear their reputation through false accusations," Yassin said.

"Also this is evidence of what we had warned about ? the judiciary and the prosecutor-general must be independent and not appointed by the president," she said. "He is a Morsi appointee and this is where his loyalty lies and he is now implementing orders to eliminate the opposition."

The chief prosecutor, Talaat Abdullah, was appointed by Morsi at the height of the political tension over the constitution. He could not be immediately reached for comment.

Morsi's Nov. 22 presidential decrees appointed Abdullah to replace the chief prosecutor who was a holdover from the Mubarak regime. The judiciary protested the move, seeing it as trampling of its authority to choose the chief prosecutor.

The Supreme Judicial Council, the country's highest judicial authority, asked Abdullah to step down Wednesday because he was appointed by the president.

Human Rights lawyer Bahy Eddin Hassan said the fact that the chief prosecutor has asked for an investigation meant he is taking the accusations by the lawyers seriously.

Abdullah asked a judge to conduct the investigation, the state news agency reported.

Hassan said this was an attempt to show that the investigation is independent. However the judiciary, like the rest of the country, is divided between supporters and opponents of Morsi and the Brotherhood.

"This is the beginning of a series of events where the judiciary will be used to settle political scores with opponents," Hassan said. "This is not a new policy. But it is new that a regime that is just starting out uses such tools."

With an economic crisis and unpopular austerity measures looming in Egypt, Hassan said: "The regime wants to keep the opposition busy with its legal battles."
